Seriously, overheating can damage a computer worst case, and if it's shutting itself down to protect itself from that damage it's not very useful.
A refrigerated plate isn't going to help either.
Use a flashlight to look in the openings and vents on the computer and see if you can see any dust balls blocking them. If you do, see if you can use a tweezers to pull them out. Other than that, vacuuming and using compressed air may help a little, but really having the computer opened up and thoroughly cleaned is the only way to fix it.
Search YouTube for videos showing how to open up and clean your specific laptop model (be sure its for YOUR kind of computer).
If you know anyone at school who's good with computers, or a teacher or friend's Dad, maybe they could help you.
Just use a vacuum cleaner with a paper funnel o-o
Cheap and easy way~
Or you can go out and get yourself an air duster. They're not that pricey >.<

Putting a cold plate on a hot computer won't hurt the computer, but it's not going to help anything either.
More importantly, why is the computer overheating, and why not fix the problem..?
get a cooler
