Because of the Premium cubes. Makes it possible to make 3line equips easier.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think thats also the reason why shields are worth a bit more, now you don't have to worry about landing all 10 slots on a maple shield when you can land a few on a normal 7 slot shield and get 3lines of %str, luk, dex etc.
Also, 3line SMGs boost damage more than wgs. Like when I had 10 att work gloves and replaced them with 8 att 3% str, +5 str, 50+ magic def, SMGs boosted damage alot more.
Also don't forget, SMGs are 3rd tier so I assume it makes them better aswell. And they're common, all jobs can use them.
