I see a bunch of people with a floating green magnus head above them; what exactly is it and what does it do? Sorry I haven't played in a long time

It's a boss soul, you need 10 soul shards from that boss to get a random type of soul. It gives some att/matt when charged with monsters killed, that one is the highest tier which gives a passive +24stat, 15 all, 6 att, matt, hp depending on your luck when you use the shards. The regular magnus soul gives a kind of crappy ultimate skill. Magnificent souls are rare and give a better passive boost and usually are a summon.
They're souls attached to the weapon. You can get souls from different bosses. They allow you to use a special skill that will summon the boss to attack for you for a limited amount of time.
