Anyone know how to make it work? I see no option for it when there is supposed to be one.

Where did you read that exactly?
Edit: Nvm I see it.
LOL They forgot it.
Or, it might come July 7th with Shade I assume.
Perhaps if you change your status to offline from the buddy chat system, it might stay invisible unless you change it back. Try it out?
I wish they had put it in... my friends keep laughing at my link skill mules' igns.
The only logical explanation is...they didn't implement it. In my opinion, you're searching for an answer to something that doesn't exist. If the button isn't there, I doubt that there's a secret way to get it.

I am aware of that scroll list in the buddy window, but that's not what I'm looking for.
It doesn't stop the " ------ has logged in" message on other screens.

It's right there.
Note: You can't log in as a literally "invisible" person. The game simply puts your characters name under "offline" if any of your buddies try and check.
But they can still see you if you're near them.
