There wasn't really any demand back then to use another type of browser (other than whatever Mac used) so there was no need to design a site to work with another browser. Not really a smart idea, but back then, there was no need to do it otherwise.

I remember when Google didn't exist. We had to use AskJeeves and Dogpile.

Firefox wasn't released until late 2004, so in 2006 it was still pretty unused compared to the majority of internet browsers. Internet Explorer is still the #1 used browser in the world.
