fate/stay night question

hi basil! i was interested in starting fate/stay night but just found out through reviews that there's a prequel, namely fate/zero. question is, do i need to watch fate/zero to enjoy fate/stay night? i'd prefer not to watch the prequel just 'cause i don't have the energy to commit to both series right now hahaha... bu i wanted to make sure before watch ep0. anyways, any and all input would help. thanks so much!

Okay I will explain the entire Fate Stay / Night saga so you understand. Fate Stay / Night is basically a visual novel. The visual novel had 3 paths and 3 endings depending on the path you took. Like a choose your own adventure book. The first path is called Fate where Shiro falls in love with Saber. The second one is unlimited blade works where he falls in love with Rin. And the last one is called Heavans Wheel where he falls in love with Sakura.

All three take part in the same timeline and same period. It is just the 3 different paths you can take in the visual novel. 3 different verions of the same story.

Fate / Zero is a prequel. It tells you what happened before the Fate Stay / Night's 3 various paths you can take. It happens before.

As for anime the best way to watch it is watch the old fate stay / night, then fate / zero and then unlimited blade works.
i'd say just watch the ubw anime and then decide if you want to watch f/z or wait for the heaven's feel movie. the 2006 f/sn is made by DEEN and is one of their infamously bad titles, so watch at your own risk.

@eecohch: imo order of creation and intent matter more than the series internal chronology. not only was f/sn made first, f/z was made specifically to build on it & fill gaps. you get to see kirei and kiritsugu in f/sn and then trace backwards to their roots. and like i said, f/z is so different in tone and presentation that i think viewing f/sn makes for an easier transition than vice versa.
Thanks for the clarification. I actually didn't realize F/Z was animated after F/SN.

Fate/Stay Night is more accessible than Zero so I would watch that before it and then go for Zero. I watched Zero with no prior knowledge of the series and while it was enjoyable it was kind of a cluster of information that didn't make sense to me in the beginning. Right now I'm watching the remake and enjoying it as I can see the relations and parallels that go along with it, so it probably doesn't really matter which order you go in as long you realize that you'll be viewing one or the other from a different perspective with a different mind set.
so i just read up some more and so far i'm understanding it as... f/sn came out in 2006, then f/zero in 2011, and then a remake of f/sn (based on the Unlimited Blade Works route(?)) in 2014. however, within the universe's chronology, it goes f/z and then f/sn, while the most recent f/sn released in 2014 is like another alternative storyline of the f/sn of 2006? my goodness this is confusing. all in all, to get the most of the series, i should watch it just like that in its release order, correct? would it not be cool if i just watched the most recent f/sn of 2014?

do not watch fate/zero before watching fate/stay night
f/z is intended as a companion piece for somebody already familiar with fate. f/z will spoil things and also lose some impact if you aren't familiar with some of fate's characters/events. i have also seen way too many people go into f/sn expecting it to be like f/z and whining that it isn't.
so really it seems like the best way to just go in order they were (originally) made. f/sn (f/sn, ubw, heaven's feel) before f/z.
I recognize that F/Z is intended as a companion piece for people familiar with the franchise but just for the sake of plot progression, wouldn't it make more sense to start with F/Z since it takes place before F/SN?

I find FSN(remake) to be far more "epic" with the fate/zero backstory, especially with the parallel between kiritsugu and shirou's character. But I dunno, maybe thats just me.
