I believe I read somewhere a while back that the Maplestory login page does not use an encrypted connection when sending over your credentials, thus if you're on an unprotected wireless connection, someone could theoretically sniff out whatever you're typing/sending and use that.

Launching from a website is only unsafe in the sense that there is the possibility that you can mistakenly end up going to a website that will do a Java run-by and insert a keylogger through what looks like a Java update. If you make sure you're always on http://maplestory.nexon.net/ you shouldn't have any problems. Also make sure you don't use browser launcher on a computer that isn't your own because it may save your user and password. It's best to just use Gamelauncher for a fool proof way to not get hacked by visiting a mock Nexon website.

No game would let you get hacked from using the official launcher.
