Do I need car insurance if I only have a permit?

Do I need car insurance if I only have a permit? I only drive with my dad and he has the the car insured with his name, so do I need insurance now or wait until just before I get my license?

Btw, this is in Texas, if it matters.

You don't need insurance at all until you're 18. Technically you can drive your parent's cars with their name under insurance, but you still need to be under the insurance aswell.

Like what most people above me said, you don't need your name on the insurance until you have your license. Once you get a car, make sure your dad puts your name on the cheapest car/oldest car your family has. That way the insurance rate will be a bit lower. You'll still be covered if you have a wreck in a different car.

If you only have a learner's permit, you need to have a licensed person in the car with you when you're driving. That person needs to have the insurance on the car, not you. When you get your license, your dad can add your name to the policy.
