help with modem and routers

i am now living on my own and i need some help setting up my internet, tomorrow i have someone coming over for comcast installation and i told them i would have my own modem. I bought a modem Motorola SB6141 since it was on the page of comcast supported modems. On the back of the modem it says wifi is not supported and I need wifi since I have a roommate and be both use laptops. I looked online and it said I needed a router but all of the help threads online just confused me. so my question is do i need a router for my sb6141 modem and why?
thanks

The router also provides a good deal of security by isolating your computer(s) from the Internet, providing a hardware firewall to block intrusions and allows more than one computer or device to be connected to your one Comcast Internet connection.

You COULD just plug the computer directly into the SurfBoard modem and it would work, but you'd have no hardware protection between you and the Internet, you could only have one computer (or other Internet enabled device, such as a tablet or smartphone) connected, and you'd have no WiFi.

So yes, you really do need a router.

Yes. The modem should be bridged to the router.

The modem's function is to sync with the ISP. The router handles inbound and outbound connections as well as provide a wifi access point.
