I almost never resort to that only because I'd rather solve the problem with what I have (unless of course it's a virus). But today I got that hackshield error again and I found a way you could get around it, not sure if it will work for you, but basically I went on IE and went on the homepage, logged in and launched it through the browser, after that I could use my desktop gamelauncher without a problem.

EDIT: I also did some research and this error came up as far back as '09, there hasn't really been a fix since it's not game breaking AND it's client sided.

@hotTub: Sorry for the late reply! Yeah I meant restart, did you try making a new gamelauncher shortcut and running that as administrator?

EDIT: Make sure not to include the quotations marks.
I had the exact same problem as him but basil was down so i couldn't make a thread, I guess I'll spread my knowledge here. What I tried originally was using the auto update for HShield but that didn't work, so I decided to manually patch it and that didn't work either. I even performed a Winsock reset and a DNS flush and it DID work, but only once, then when I went on alter in the day it wouldn't worked, even after another reset and flush.

What I ended up doing that worked was that deleted my current gamelauncher shortcut and went into the existing Maplestory directory and made a new shortcut. After that I was able to run it, if that doesn't work then try performing a Winsock reset and DNS flush:

For Windows XP:

Press "Windows Key" & R The Run box should now appear
Type "cmd.exe" in the box and click "OK" The command prompt window should now appear
Type "ipconfig /flushdns" and press "Enter" on your keyboard
Then type "netsh winsock reset" and press "Enter" on your keyboard
Reboot your PC.

For Windows Vista / 7 / 8:

In the start menu search bar, type "cmd" "cmd.exe" should be one of the first things on the list to appear.
Right Click "cmd.exe" and select "Run as administrator" The command prompt window should now appear with administrator privledges
Type "ipconfig /flushdns" and press "Enter" on your keyboard
Then type "netsh winsock reset" and press "Enter" on your keyboard
Reboot your PC.

Hope this helps!
