Impossible to change sound Default Format on windows xp?

So, ive looked for about an hour and found no way to on xp. Most sites say its impossible. I cant play my skyrim if it isnt, because that seems to be the only fix and all the other ones dont work for me. Does anyone know if its even possible?

I didn't see anything specific in a Google search of Skyrim, sound, and XP.. most of the discussions seem to assume Windows 7.
Possibly a user forum on the game's site might have some discussion there of sound problems/fixes in more detail.

Also, that's a good point about determining whether it's actually a sound problem. The point where you said it's freezing sounds like it might be a transition point into a video cutscene (I haven't played Skyrim so I don't know how it starts), so it might be a video card driver problem instead. Hard to diagnose sometimes.
That's what I told him to do from the start and he ignored my post!

Also have you tried disabling your sound card all together from the device manager? This might let you know whether the problem actually comes from your onboard sound/sound card.
I did not ignore it, I had already done it - no results. I'll try disabling it.
As far as I know, those are the only controls XP offers for sample rate settings.

The only other thing to try would be to make sure you have the newest audio drivers for your computer.
Get them from your computer manufacturer's web site Support page.

There's also a possibility that the drivers Audio Control panel may have sound sample rate settings buried somewhere in an Advanced tab or button.
I looked in my AsRock ""HD Adeck" settings, but couldn't find anything. Yours might have something though.

In XP, try going into the Control Panel--> Sounds and Audio Device Properties, then click the Audio tab, then under Playback click the Advanced button, then the Performance tab.

Slide the "Sample rate conversion quality" slider at the bottom all the way to the left, then hit "Apply" and then try the game.
If it works that way, try moving the slider up a notch at a time and see if the game still works. Use the highest setting where the game still works.

You can also try adjusting the top slider (Hardware Acceleration) the same way to see if that has any effect on it.
Already tried that :

I also tried the combinations of all the sliders. Like 2nd notch up top, 1st on bottom, etc.
Not sure what you mean by "Sound Default Format".
If any game works, you should be able to get sound from SkyRim also.

What exactly is the problem..?
After the Bethesda logo, my game crashes. After a lot of research, most of the answers were "Adjust Sound Settings to 24/16 bit / 48k Hz."

On windows xp, again, it seems that this is impossible to do as it is not an option. I was hoping to find a way to manually do it.

I'll help you out. Can you post the model of your computer to begin?

Try to find the latest audio drivers for your computer as a start.
