Self scrolling vs Pre-scrolled?
I've got all the clean gear but none of it is scrolled. What is more expensive? Scrollnig it myself or buying a prescrolled one in FM?

Buying pre-starred Tyrant capes is much cheaper than enhancing yourself.

The answer really depends on a lot of factors like
Inherent factors
A) Type (Mage glove, Thief hat, etc)
B) Stat (dex/luk/int/str)
C) % (3, 6, 9, 12, 15...)
As well as external factors such as
D) Population of the world you're playing in
E) Popularity of the class
F) How long you're willing to wait
G) How well connected you are
I) How good you and the seller are at bargaining

and for the next fourteen stars? Even just getting to 2 can be a struggle since its a 50/50 chance.

Ummm, to do 1 star just takes 1 AEE since its 100% =D.
I always prefer buying pre-scrolled. Hypothetical math calculations are what I depend on when I buy items. I calculate what someone with "average" luck would have and that gives me a ballpark price check for the item.
For gollux equips, I prefer pre-cubed and the scrolling, I don't care about. Ideally, I'd prefer pre-cubed and non-scrolled because people tend to overprice perfectly scrolled gollux equips as if it were difficult to make.
