You get 1 rune per boss you kill. The boxes cost 2-4 runes (armor boxes =2, weapon boxes =4). The boxes can give you these special items upon opening, at a low chance.

For questions above, this is correct. It's confirmed that AEEs will blow up the item, while EEs do not.

But does anyone know an approximate price?

Root Abyss, which can be accessed through the door icon on the left side of the screen.
You need to get runes (which look like green coins) which are rare drops from the gargoyles inside or defeat the bosses, which drop 1 every time you kill it. All members in the same party receive the rune if one person loots.

@iCodykins: yeah, was just curious since I'm looking to 20% anniversary scroll a gun if I can get one from root.
