I do have Steam (Only TF2, because I'm that guy)

its a huge convience for people to log in and out.
off topic, but you should try tribes: acend, its f2p and extremely fun

this. i started using it when the chrome launcher from the site stopped working and i just havnt switched back. its easier for me
it has 2 major advantages.
1. You can launch right from desktop- i just right click the icon and press maplestory
2. Unlike the gamelauncher, you dont need to type in your password every time you want to change characters, which is the same as opening from the website.
I think it's easier and faster than using either game launcher or the site.
So that when you play MapleStory on Steam, everyone can see the pop up saying "Steam IGN" is now playing MapleStory?
It's really just a way for Nexon to bring in more players. There's the slight convenience factor as well.
Some people find it easier to launch it through there.
They can chat to steam friends easier.
