is there anything to do with old skill books other than drop them?

EE scrolls still works in the same way that they did, but obsoletes now that star force do the same without the chance of blow your equips on failure... and yes star force use mesos

No not really

Starforce is how many stars (enhancements) you have on your gear. Enhancing gear is a crap load easier too and you don't even have to use enhancement scrolls

The orange portals are basically gear checks

Welcome back! I just returned too like a day ago! The last thing I remember playing was when Beast Tamer was released.

I don't know all the new difference, but I did look up about the mastery books last night. It seems the old mastery books are useless now. You can now purchase a generic mastery book that works with all skills for 4th Advancement by Iliad in Leafre:
- 3mil for a 20 Mastery Book
- 5mil for a 30 Mastery Book

all skill books is useless now, you can buy those level 20/30 mastery books in npc store for really cheap.
Star force allow you to enhance without using NX (protection scrolls) and gain decent amount of stats compare to back then (+2/+3 main stats)

Orange portal is star force map? I think the more stars force you have the more damage you do. 6% stuff is like meh, not so good
