Step 1. Go to reddit Step 2: Have a hard time deciding which subreddit to go to because they're all pretty vague Step 3: Have an even harder time deciding which links are appealing enough to open an entire new tab Step 4: Find mostly crap posts Step 5: Never find the funny comments that you see on "Funniest Reddit Comments" lists Step 6: Cry and go to 9gag cause it's easier
Somewhere where you can go and quickly comment/post/ask questions/etc... I think the idea is that there's a "subreddit" for everything, and you can go chat about that certain thing. For me, the appeal is that you don't have to go through a registration process to comment, you can comment anywhere. a little bit like basil in the fast-pacedness of it all... but the ugly layout and lack of avatars makes it a lot harder to get that sense of "community" That said, it is good for little "subreddits" in the cases where a forum site for the topic might not exist or be readily accessible (i.e. if I want to ask a question about which kind of bedding to buy for my house, I can probably just find a "subreddit" for it instead of trudging through the internet and signing up for some random-ass forum site that gets 3 users a day).
It encourages groupthink and ego-stroking with the upvote/downvote system - some "edgy" 12-year-old or neckbeard will make a slightly racist joke, and it will get +4000 upvotes with a string of comments full of bad puns and off-topic remarks following - each redditor thinking they're smarter than the person above them circlejerking and getting "upvoted" for dumb groupthink comments.
So aside from the little niche places (many of which are awful regardless), most of the site is just a cesspool of 20/30-something white male neckbeards trying to out-do each other with how smart they think they are.
It's like basilmarket, but much bigger and more well-known than Basilmarket. So just like how Basilmarket has topics divided into sections (i.e. General Maplestory, Chat Island), Reddit has subreddits such as /r/AskReddit and /r/Circlejerk
The community is very diverse depending on the subreddit. Some will actually contribute good material to read and others will pull out and reuse the same jokes until it's completely dead.
