I Dont Get This Internet Connection

Hi Basil, let's get to it shall we?

(I think the background and details are pretty important, but if you're in no mood of reading this, you can skip to my question which is the final paragraph in this thread).
OK, so I've had a 5 MB internet connection for like a year (maybe a year and a half), and recently my dad said that he is going to replace servers and get a 10 MB connection. I thought that it would be nice, my internet wasn't slow (it was quite fast, not gonna say insanely speedy) so I thought that since it's twice the connection speed it will be really fast (yes I know that today you can get a 100 MB connection, but I don't think it has much difference for above 30 MB).
Anyway, the connection got installed and as I was "breaking in" the new connection I saw that it's much MUCH slower. It really sucks, so I went to check the internet speed (not an add, so I won't mention the site) and it showed that my current connection is significantly faster (like a lot faster). But when I actually go online I can clearly notice that it's slower.

Examples. Well when I'm watching movies online I noticed that it takes really long for them to load, I have to wait like 30 mins to an hour and then go back to watch the movie (I never had to wait with my old internet connection). The connection breaks, meaning it sometimes just stops and I can't load any site. It's not rare that I have to refresh a site so it would work. And like I said, the loading time is really long... And it's not just on my laptop that I'm noticing it, it's also on my sister's laptop and my parents' desktop.

Could you guys please help answer this question. How come technically my internet connection is twice as fast then my old one (new one = 10 MB, old one = 5 MB), yet when it comes to actually surfing online etc. it's more then 4 times as slow and is breaking? Help will be appreciated.

@qtprincessxoxo: My computer is about a year and a half old, and it's not just me that it slows down. My parents' desktop is really slow and my sister's is a little worse then mine (I know that my neighbors from aren't using mine, since one family has it's own connection and the other has 2 connections. The ones from the back are too far to get any signal). Only 2 computers are usually connected (mine and my parents') and it's been this way since the old connection so I don't think either one of us is using a lot of bandwidth.

Edit: @above: I got a B+. And it's said that my PING is very good... I don't get it it's driving me crazy.
Perhaps it's your browser?
Or your PING is higher?
Or your connection on a whole is just very unstable?

Idk much about internet connections.
Nope, I connect to other networks perfectly fine, and some even faster then mine.

Edit: @finkle: No they have their own internet connection (2 of them, they show on my connection options). It's usually just 2 computers that are connected (sometimes 3 when my sister comes home from college).
What are you using to connect to your network?
Well I have a built in wireless connection on my laptop, if that's what you mean. It works fine from what I know so far (when I connects to other networks well).

Edit: @above: Really? Man I hope you're right.
5mb....quite fast?
It loaded websites on the spot (meaning it didn't load parts of the site or stalled at highest for over 2 seconds) and I didn't have to wait for videos to load. Maybe it wasn't the greatest connection in the world, but it sure was enough for me.
