Thoughts on Sao?

Hey guys, I loved watching SAO, it's one of my favorite anime's, however reading reviews on it made me noticed that there are very split opinions on it. And at the end it's either you really LOVE it or you really HATE it. So since I love it, I want to know what your thoughts on the anime is, if you hate it, why? Is it because it's Harem? I liked the Harem-ness, or because of the unnecessary "family relationship" between Suguha and Kirito? Share pls.

EDIT: So I see what you all say, and it seems that it just comes down to bad plot, bad writing, sucky characters, bad pacing, and overall just unexplained things. I agree with some of this (bad pacing, unexplained stuff). I still don't understand why alot of you just plain hate it. However it should've had more action and explanations of how the game works, and not go towards romance so much, I liked the romance. Lol, call me a dimwit for enjoying the anime a whole lot, but I just found it really interesting and it always kept me on my toes to find out what happens next. Oh well, Thanks for all of your contributions.

I have only watched the abridged...so um...I guess it was good? Don't care for the actual series.

Nearly 2 years and this SAO business is still going on as passionate as ever. This anime is just another ordinary, typical and expected 'brick' in the 'wall' of ordinary, typical and expected anime.
Move along people.

@Plenair: You're very condescending for no good reason lol. How is my head in kirito's ass? I'm fully aware what the focus of the anime was and that the time skipping was not a mistake. It was a hypothetical statement.

And, to be clear, "I enjoyed it," is not the same as blindly calling it the best thing to ever happen to anime. I'm aware it has flaws, but I still found enjoyment in it, despite those flaws. You're making it too black and white. Not hating it doesn't make me a fanatical fan.

I dropped SAO at episode 11. I already knew what was going to happen with all the spoilers but I really couldn't get into to it. It was pretty cool at first but I don't know I just lost interest.

it was good for the first 7 episodes.. then it went downhill. I have some hope for GGO because there's only one prominent girl in the arc (his sister and asuna are minor characters). Hopefully that would prevent SAO from turning into a harem fanservice fest.

@Icephoenix21: I know you weren't i was merely saying that .//hack is harder to get. And i haven't seen it nor played the games so i cant judge it.

However Log Horizon was really enjoyable, with a normal protagonist who isn't so overpowered his fart could kill something.

Extremely over-hyped. Not much character development. Main character was boring. Story was meh. All imo

All in all, it was decent. But not worthy of all the hype it gets.

I'm not disagreeing with you in the least bit- I'm still trying to get a hold of a few of the first series games without paying an arm and a leg ;-;
However, my comment still stands that dot hack is better than sao.

I suppose log horizon would be a better mmo-based anime to compare to sao, but I have yet to watch that.
SAO is objectifyingly teh best animu show ever made.

Why dis show is good:
-the main character Kirito (who is so dreamy and to die for) is so super strong and smartz <3
-Kirito is not like any other generic MC, he's just so awesome
-all the girls love Kiriot cuz he's awesome like i said and i m so jealous of asuna cause she got to glop him up real gudz
-this animu doesn't pander to stuck up 1337s, only true fangirls can appreiciate the wonder and majesty that is known is sword art onlne. it has such an awesome storyline inside a video game (every girls dream right?)
-all da girls in dis show is so cute, i wouldn't mind if my hubby Kirito had a harem, as long as i'm his first waifu

Why SAO haters have it wrong:
-their all a bunch of hipsters hatin on everything
-they'll a bunch of loser virgins who never lay with a girl living in there parents basements needing to hate on something
-these losers are just jealous they aren't getting as much action as Kirito
-i am right and you are not
Trying too hard grill.
OP: SAO wasn't so bad.

I agree that you either love it or hate it, there are some episodes that felt sorta boring but compared to Shingeki sao is a heaven sent. Idk why but I hate shingeki with a burning passion as hot as the sun.

I liked the idea of being stuck in an online game and the anime illustrations were pretty too but
the plot itself was disappointing.
It just wasn't interesting enough for me..

@Icephoenix21 The only problem with .Hack is you cant just sit down and start watching the anime.
Because the story carries over from games to anime to game, so unless you have finished the games you miss out on a lot of important plot points.

I'm tired of all the hate for SAO honestly. I'm not going to defend SAO saying that it's the best show over but it's not as bad as people claim it is. My biggest complaint about it all was how they made some things very cheesy. Other than that I enjoyed it.

brace yourself, wall of text incoming
let see, objectively:

- MC is not a good character.
what makes a good character, you ask? a good character is someone who is significantly different from the rest of the characters in general animes. it is someone who you will instantly remember if you are talking with others about it or writing in the forums about it. basically someone unique, different from your typical MC like naruto (a bratty teenager yelling "believe in me! i am going to be hokage!" ), natsu (a bratty teenager beliving in the power of friendship) or the whiny teenager like shuu from GC. or your typical dense MC in harems...
want some examples for great characters? Accelerator from TAMNI (complex character, writing about him would take half a page here), Hikigaya Hachiman from Oregairu, Rider from Fate/zero, Okabe Rintarou from Steins Gate

and kirito? well you got him beating the **** out of the boss mobs he runs on his way, picking up girls like pokemon, basically he is a wish fullfilment character. not that this is a bad thing, but the problem is, he doesnt change. his characterization is static. he only belives in his justice and we view from his way. but what if the anime protrayed him differently? instead of saving his squad duing the first boss battles, we only see him ksing the final blow on the boss. instead of him joining the guild, we see him only unable to save saki and driving the last guild member into suicide. instead of him saving all the girls as damsel in distress we only see him taking all the girls left and right. instead of him beating kayaba and saving all, we only see him having some unexplainable power of love breaking in game rules and dealing the finishing blow on kayaba...
now, i know this is not what has happened, but would he be as likable as now, if the anime protayed him this way? probably not.

- female lead character is... a generic tsundere.
well, in generall i dont mind character trophes like tsunderes, but for all the potential she had shown in the beginning it was a let down...
also, pretty much all female characters - including his cousin - becomes somewhat abandoning all the powre they have and relying on him. most of them only show for 1 episodes, asuna and suguha... well, they are protrayed as his waifu. they could have handled it better... seriously...

- the villains are cringe worthy
most of the villains are only villains for the sake of the story. they are evil so an hero can beat the **** out of them. probably only exception from this statement is kayaba, though they never bothered to explain why he had put so many people in game and killing quite a few of them.
other villains? let see... the villain of second half is a frigging butterfly, in the first half we also had the one dude from laughing coffin who got killed (i think it is called this), but the MC get away with the killing because he is soooo evil... (well, at least in GGO he will question himself whether this was the right thing to do or not, showing that this is not random...), the woman with the spear got sent to jail because she in directly killed others...
it dont have to be this random. villains dont need to be evil to be villains, mostly it is a different opinion which is enough to set someone as a villain.

want some great villains? i show you some: yagami light aka kira from death note (showing similar to lelouch from code geass the view of the story from the villain, kira is the villain, lelouch plays the villain for the greater good.), makishima from Psycho Pass (showing how to be an amazing philosophical bastard), kaiki from monogatari series (from the antagonist in nisemonogatari turning into a fabulous amazing bastard in MSSS) or kirei from Fate Zero (how to be a twisted sadistic bastard with abilites pwning his opponents)

the only reason why everybody likes seemingly like this show is mainly because of the animation quality and the soundtrack. but these are only a question of how much money certain people are willing to pump to fund it. another example where you can see the fanbase clearly split is in case of guilty crown. some are calling this the best **** ever (i know it is only a minority, but it is there), while the rest of us are pretty much dissapointed with the show.

if you want an anime about MMORPG, watch log horizon.
to show the differences between these two, let me put it in this way.

SAO is an anime set in an MMORPG, but it is actually about a solo player picking all the girls and sololing through the game. it is more a romance/action story set in an MMORPG, but it could be any fantasy setting, meaning, the MMORPG setting is not necessary.
LH is an anime about an MMORPG, showing actual group fights, intellectal battles and interactions with other players, npcs and showing in game rules and actually following them. this anime actualy tells the story about a group of gamers in an MMORPG and dealing with the MMORPG

i smell fails all around:
SAO could've been 10 times better, but alas, it ended up being crap in the end, especially the fairy dance arc.

and yet, like the idiot that i tend to be, ima end up watching GGO along wit the rest of the delusionals.

graphics was probably one of the best out there, but other then that characters, storyline was terrible.
Kirito basically had the main character syndrome where he is strong just cause hes the main character.
Asuna became a helpless girl in the 2nd season.
the sister finding out that kirito is his cousin and falls in love with kirito doesnt make any sense at all.

Eh people were just mad that it was a let down after the first 3 episodes. It used a lot of trashy aspects such as harem, incesst, and tentacles with some pretty shallow characters. But even with those blights it was still very much entertaining to the non-otaku person. It really only bothered people who like to get super in-depth with their anime criticizing, whereas more casual, or as I call "normal" people, found it to be imperfect but a helluva fun show to watch nonetheless.

I dropped it on the third episode. The first episode was fine, episode 2 was kind of meh but not enough to call the series bad as a whole, and episode 3 was so godawful that I lost all hope for the show right then and there. Good thing too, because as people kept watching it I kept hearing more and more opinions that it sucked.

Though I can't believe that I actually watched through all of, and kind of enjoyed Accel World. I still cringe at that thought.

And I'm not taking into account the LNs (which I read) which are already poorly written.

I dropped SAO even before it really went downhill (episode 10 I think), I could forgive the bad pacing or the lack of game mechanics involved, but the romance was so terrible I could not take another moment. It felt extremely artificial as there was almost no character or romantic development, it just felt like 2 characters got together for the hell of it. I don't consider myself a hipster who gates on popular shows (for example I think Shingeki is great), but SAO is actually terrible in my opinion.

While it was airing the general opinion was "Omg SAO is the best anime." After it finished and Attack on Titan became the next big anime it became "You like SAO? That anime sucks, Attack on Titan is the best anime ever!" Anime fans are fickle lol.

Anyway, I enjoyed it, but then I seem to be in the minority these days. Yes the plot could have been better (the mmo thing had a good concept), but it was entertaining nonetheless, and that's what I watch anime for. Not to critique them on their art direction, perfect plots, in-depth characters, etc. So to me SAO wasn't too bad, just wish it didn't skip through time so often during the first MMO. I would have liked to see more of the boss fights lol.
