Can someone please explain Fusing?

I've been seeing some threads that have people talking about fusing their items and getting potentialed items and I was wondering if someone could explain it to me.

You take 2 of the exact same items. The stats do not matter. (So technically not the exact same)
You fuse them together, i'm pretty sure you need a rock you buy from the stores in Ardent, and depending on the tier of the item you're fusing together, you need x amount of rocks. (They're cheap though)
People like to buy duplicates of items from shops in orbis or w/e and just fuse them together and try to get potential, which isn't a very rare occasion if you're alchemy/herb is above 5/6. Another good method is to make a crafting mule and make earrings, and fuse two earrings with potential together, it makes another earring with hidden pot. So you aren't just throwing the bad ones away
You cannot get a legendary item tier from fusing.
You can get unique.
Your name still appears at the bottom, and it says 'Crafted By:' ( Or whatever it usually says )
That's all i can think of. I'm pretty sure you also need a certain level to fuse certain leveled items. (Herb/Alchemy Level, that is)

I'm going to assume you know the basics of how to actually fuse.

Non pot item + non pot item = Low chance of getting pot

Pot item + non pot item = Medium chance of getting pot

Pot item + pot item = High chance of getting pot (Not 100% more like 90%)

In other words, when fusing, always fuse non pot with non pot, and fuse pot with pot. Fusing is a cheap way to get % stat without cubing and spending billions of mesos on gears. Best items to fuse are the Lv.40 ones you can actually purchase in store so you can continually buy and fuse them until you get your desired % stat.

EDIT: @Kewt

Just talk to the NPC, becoming an alchemist takes less than 2 minutes. Just as easy as mining except you're using a shovel. Keep in mind you need to rank your alchemy level up in order to fuse higher level equips. Fusing items also increase your alchemy rank so if you start by fusing a ton of sneakers, you can easily raise your alchemy level.

you talk to grant and then you talk to the herbalist person on the right and become an herbalist and then you talk to ally all the way on the left and become an alchemist

Okay so my next question is, How do you become an alchemist? Is it hard? I've never even gone into that one town with the mining and all that ROFL

Fusing is basically making two item (that are the same) and making them into one item (of the same item)
The new item is clean (Regardless of the stats of the previous items used), and has a chance to have a potential (although Two potential items will result in a potential item as well)

Okay so you get a character who's an alchemist, get two of the same equips (i.e 2 red sneakers, not 1 red and 1 blue), buy 2 or 3 alchemist stones from the materials npc in Ardentmill for 5k ea, and finally you can fuse the two into one. If you fuse two already potentialed equips together, there's a higher chance the resultant equip has potential.
