If you like apps, avoid BB phones.
Otherwise, both are fine, really.
iPhone 4. Especially after you jailbreak; the possibilities become endless.
How I see it...
iPhone 4 = Entertainment purposes
Blackberry = Socializing purposes
Neither.
But, if I have to choose, Blackberry.
I just don't like iPhone.
From what I see, people with BlackBerry's always have them in their pockets, like it's if they don't have anything to do on it besides your basic call and text etc. whereas iPhone users always have them out.

however my phone is screwy so I might buy a 8G iPhone 3G from a friend for $180

You can look through them and see which one you like better.
I had the deathgrip on my iPhone, but it was still a sick phone. If I lived in a place with better reception I woulda kept it, no doubt about it.
The BlackBerry is more for business type people. It honestly has so many functions built in you won't know what to do with yourself.
