If I get what you're saying, yes you can use an anviled item to change the appearance of another item. Say if you wanted to use a DB mask and anvil it with a shiny red symbol, the shiny red symbol will look like a DB mask and you can use the shiny red symbol(db mask) to make another item look like a db mask.
You can anvil over another anvil as many times as you want, and you can anvil an item for it's looks as many times as you want
