Need some suggestions for a laptop

My parents are planning to buy me a new laptop. They suggested a Mac, but my cousin (who is using a Mac right now) is suggesting otherwise.
Anything that allows me to do my homework efficiently, easy to use, portable, and lots of GB perhaps.

Budget: ?

If you want to game heavily on a laptop you probably shouldn't be getting a super thin and light laptop anyway since their GPUs are subpar and won't fare well with anything more intense than League of Legends or TF2.

Also, Macs allow you to install Windows alongside Mac OS so you can use either OS as you need, thus weakening the "download potential" argument. The hardware is kinda on average with the rest of the competition but their battery life is really great. They also have a great resale value so you know you can get some money back if you decide to get a newer computer in the future.

One laptop that I have in mind is the new Dell XPS 13 since it has a 13 inch screen in a laptop that is as small as a laptop with an 11.6 inch screen. Upgrades are limited and expensive and you should try to type with the keyboard to get a feel before you buy but I wouldve bought the Dell XPS 13 if I did not have my Macbook.

Lenovo makes some pretty good and durable machines but recently Lenovo was (still is) in hot water for installing some really annoying adware which you can read more about here.

@LeadIn: The quality of it. Fan problems and what not. The only good thing about it, is the beats audio cause HP has a contract with beats

I would personally avoid a Mac to be honest. The main reason is that a Mac is designed for simplicity and does not have a lot of download potential. Many games cannot be gotten on the Mac because Mac makes it very hard to download. This usually isn't a problem but considering your on a maplestory site, you clearly have some amount of interest in gaming which the Mac will limit you in.
So I guess its settled, Acer or Lenovo. Might do window shopping later
Might I suggest the http://shop.lenovo.com/us/en/laptops/lenovo/z-series/z50/ Z50 priced at $599? I can't say if it's a good deal or not, but it seems pretty cheap compared to similar models including the z40. I bought the z50 myself a few days ago. I7 processor. Or perhaps the Y40/Y50 model if you're into gaming. I mean otherwise you might as well get any old laptop because they're all pretty much portable unless you get some HEAVY DUTY one that comes with like everything. Also depends on the OS you like. If you like windows 7, well you're out of luck since most comes preinstalled with windows 8. If you like macs, they're nice just sucky for some games and costly. I'm not one to care about graphics. All I care about is being able to play my games in general and having them load fast. I know tons of people who play league who loads league in like 10 sec and it takes me 2 minutes every game on my mac lol. As long as it doesn't take that long on my z50 i'm happy xP.

Why not an ultrabook like an Aspire Acer S7?

If you're using solidworks or matlabs, the high DPI will cause issues.

My family and I have all owned HP laptops, my mom multiple ones, and EVERY SINGLE ONE broke in some way or another. malfuntioning network drives, battery-failiure leading to a hard drive crash, overheating problems, slow hardware, etc... I'm currently on a Lenovo v570, and while i can't say I use it for school, It's been functioning 100% for 4 years now.

Oh I mean if your parents are getting it for you... you should get a Lenovo. For potability, maybe a Carbon X1, or just Lenovos in general... They are very good and reliable machines!
If you want to get a mac(book) my suggestion is to buy a used one on Ebay. Are you looking for something thin and light or are you more inclined towards getting something with an optical drive and removable battery?
thin and light would be cool, so I could carry it easier :o
Do you have anything in mind?
They had a slightly higher product-defect rate back in the last decade, they're about average now I'd say. I personally haven't ever had any problems with an HP product, though there are several people who have (the same can be said about any and every brand though)
And idk. You have very minimal requirements it would seem. Just pick up something cheap.
Alright, I'm using HP as well and so far nothing has happened..
Guess I'll just try something new haha.

Thanks for suggestions!
If it's just schoolwork and user friendliness then any cheap laptop should suffice. I would not recommend Macs since they are overpriced.
My parent's mindset- the expensive it is the better it is
but they're allowing me to pick.

Would I survive in college with something like this?
