How is it possible to get below anything B?

I don't understand how it's possible to get any less than a b in high school. I was on powerschool checking my grades the other day, had nothing else to do so i decided to check out what the kid next to me was doing he was in powerschool too and he had like 5x's and 6x's. I was thinking holy ----. I understand that there are bad teachers, however one of the 5x's one from one of the easiest teacher in my school--- All you do in his class is read books(he assigns you a part) and 1-3 essays PER marking period, and no homework at all(Not even exaggerating about out this). I'd understand if you got some C+'s/ some B-'s if you were in an IB high school or took some AP classes but it really shouldn't be possible for anyone to get anything less than a B if they take normal classes.
To those that may say bad teachers--- My geometry teacher 2 years ago was horrible. He couldn't teach at all so i literally had to teach myself geometry by looking up how to do certain problems on youtube and a few other sites--- ended up getting a B+ for the year. Are people really that lazy that they can't take 20-30minutes of their day searching up how to do xxxx problem if they don't understand it?

@Letstryit: they tell us that everything affects our grades, so you have to be active during class too every exam is important, including small ones.
some teachers are kinder when it comes to grades though

I'm pretty good at math so it isn't too difficult so far.
@Letstryit: Honestly, I don't know much about other countries schooling systems, but I do know that in European nations the general education system ends by the time you reach high school. I promise you,I hate chemistry. Plus, our schools lack funding, and teachers don't care. Those are pretty much my main problems with the American schooling system.
Can't really say much. My experience in high school so far has been different. The teacher's i've had so far have really tried their best to teach me the material(even the geometry teacher but he really couldn't teach for ----)- My APUSH teacher even has afterschool lessons in case we didn't understand something twice a week. Same for my AP Physics teacher but its only once a week. It really helps me out. The other teachers i've had have been pretty chill. They gave me an extension on some of my projects/essays last year when i explain them my family situation. My school has cut off sports since they wanted to focus solely on the tech part. So they gave the studio art class Canon G10 cameras for the year and the photography class Ipads to take pictures/record videos(Of course, if you break it you pay for it). My speech therapy class will probably get some ipads to so we can see ourselves speaking as well as record ourselves to see our progress, this seems a bit silly but oh well.
Then again the moment you even fail one class they give you a warning that they will kick you out. If you fail again then bye bye.

@zipponbolts I'm a junior not a freshmen xD freshmen can't take precal. Although its possible for sophomores if they take "college" classes through a program call LEAP(i think) I was in the high school office(you can go there during lunch to use the computers) when i saw his grades.
@pettingz Sorry but are you talking to me? I don't take any IB classes.
Doesn't seem that bad.. Precal is freshman class now? Shrug, we had to take 3 years of Algebra and geometry first.
Same thing is happening at my school, it kind of pisses me off being a senior only in Calculus AB.
The middle school that feeds into my high school changed up their math curriculum recently to get rid of a lot of the BS I had to take back then.

But I don't understand how people can even stand getting Cs... Just the thought of being "average" freaking kills me.
Right now, I have all As and one C and that C pisses me off to no end. Especially since it's in one of my easiest classes. ;__;

It makes sense but as others have said, they sometimes don't try. When I know I have an easy A in a class, I don't try to put maximum effort in everything, which just results in B's. In my case, I got a C last quarter due to the teacher grading things at the last second, and not even getting to my class.
What classes do you have? A lot of my classes only have around 50 points available per quarter. Some like my physics AP teacher has the class with around 80% of the grade on tests. o.o
At the moment- Studio Art, APUSH, British Literature, HSPA-SAT Math, Wellness(Physical education really), AP Physics and Precal.

It's very easy to score lower then a B. Miss school, teacher doesn't let you redo work; you can't make it up. You get a score lower then a B.
It's universally known that America has a horrible schooling system. Ask a student, teacher, republican, or liberal, it doesn't matter. School's one big joke now, we think of knowledge as knowing many trivial facts. Kids aren't taught how to think, but rather what to think. Our general education fails, considering what I want to be doesn't involve math, chemistry, or being physically fit. You're sent to an intuition for thirteen years, where several individuals who are most of the time devoid of empathy hold your future (I'm talking about teachers). I could go on, but you get the point.
Uh...what country doesn't require you to know trivial facts? Regardless of what country you're in you're bound to go to a school where they will teach you pointless things that you will probably never use in your life. Like history- most people don't imagine themselves as a lawyer, historian, or history teacher in the future so why should they have to take that class or any other class that they think will never help them? To open up different paths for the student. Although at the beginning you may find it useless there is a possibility you will grow to like it and succeed in it.
Or are you talking about the No Child Left Behind Act? That really is useless and a waste of money.
Also, just curious, what do you know about other countries education systems?
If you don't try whatsoever and refuses to study for tests it's easy.

I know some people who have 3% in their classes because they never show up. Also like someone else said, USA grades are extremely inflated so you might just be at a C yourself if you go somewhere else.
I agree- the majority of the public high schools grades are inflated. Thought i go to one of the best schools in my state so i don't really think it'd be a C somewhere else... maybe a B+. At the very least there hasn't been a single test in the classes i've taken(including AP) where the teachers had to curve any tests. It's high tech btw. The kid i saw was probably a freshmen(from the classes he takes anyway and he looked like one too) so maybe he's not used to the strict system the school uses.

Some people just don't care and don't make the effort, y'know? Others just don't agree with the way schools teach and assess your knowledge.

I knew a guy who failed 12th grade twice before he 'got his act together' and passed on his third try, with D's and C's.
High School is a joke.
High Schools are completely unfiltered & free of course there are going to be people who don't try and don't care about their grades.
Teenagers for the most part don't understand the importance of education nor do most of them care.

Just a word of advice AP/IB classes do not equal college level courses; so when/if you get knocked off your high horse make sure you get up and get up fast.
I've seen so many freshmen enter the school with the same mentality as you, thinking they are geniuses because they graduated from high school with all A's or B or a 4.0 GPA . Then they bomb that first Calculus 3 / Organic Chemistry / Networking / Software Developing / Engineering exam and they look like they're going to cry and run to their mommy wondering what happened after doing so "well" in High School.
Dang they are dumb. Calc 3 and O chem isn't even close to AP classes.

In middle school i had all C's... . I didn't even tried. I only got into the school i am now cause of... connections(my uncle anyway xD). So anyways i'm already expecting to have to do a lot of extra work in college if what a few of my relatives said is true--- the teacher's don't care whether or not you fail/pass the class so they don't even try their best to get you to understand the subject. Might get a tutor if necessary.

It's a mix of effort and intelligence. I never tried but was usually smart enough to get B's, but if I didn't like the teacher or found a class to be too much memorization I would sometimes get like 70's.

Some people just don't "get" school. One day you'll be in a certain class and you just flat out won't get the material and the course. Every possible thing doesn't click in every single person's brain.
I know people that study intensively to get the grades they want - and they still fail.
You know what? You need a challenge. Come to Sweden. I'm in 9th grade and this term i will get around 305p out of 320p, which is equivalent to 10 A's and 6 B's.
An average 9th grader in Sweden (2011) had 211,4p. The american grades are extremely inflated... You probably would not be able to get a lot of B's and A's
if you were here
Well this is the grade system in my school: A:94-96 A+:97-100 A-:90-93 similar for just decrease 10 to get the B's and decrease 20 for the C's. I'm just writing this cause apparently some schools still use D's. Anything below a 70 is an F. Not really that enthusiastic enough that i'd move to another country xD.

@Jrosen... so what?
My brother was in a gang and constantly got in trouble with the police getting my family to be fighting a lot. In addition, i had a severe stuttering problem since i was 8. Last year it was so bad that i could barely say a full sentence without making it seem like i was having a seizure. This year though its a lot better so i'm happy about that. My family of 4 lives in a 3 bedroom apartment(No living room 1 bathroom/kitchen the bedrooms are REALLY small. There's only a bed and a sofa in my room. My sister manage to squish in a Tv in her room Hell my homeroom(school) is bigger than my parent's whole apartment) so there's little to no privacy.

@Weregarurumon
Of course i won't memorize everything i learn. Although i may not remember everything i roughly remember half of it(this is for the subjects that don't interest me). I only memorize the things that will benefit me in the future- things relating with science/math to be specific since i'm hoping to be an engineer of some sort when i go to college.
