Art

aint it rude to ask for free drawings?

whenever i see someone asking for a request/free drawing, i cant help but think it's kinda rude. i mean i have a buddy whos a professional graffiti artist and obviously, it takes lots of effort and time to make art.

plus, if u ask someone for a free drawing, isnt it kinda implying that their art isn't good enough to be paid for? im pretty sure all artists out there spend at least 5+ hours on their work. they deserve to be paid if u ask me.

idk, this is just my personal thought. not sure if anyone will agree tho cuz pretty much EVERYONE here asks for free drawings. this doesn't apply if the artist is actually taking requests tho of course. what do u guys think.

"Hi, do you do requests?" =/= Rude
"Can you do a request for me plzz?" = Rude

A friendly reminder that money is also invested into creating art especially in terms of the non-digital or you're doing digital prints/legally buying software.
Computers and tablets also require money.

Rudeness happens when they try to guilt-trip you after you decline free work. Like, sometimes I'll do requests, despite having open commissions. Sometimes they feel more '"free,"(in that I don't need to worry about specifications and can do what I want with it) and if the person complains about the result, I don't need to worry about it! They didn't pay for it, it's ultimately all me. Of course, I've been guilt-tripped and hated on for declining requests. That's just rude.
Nothing wrong with asking, really. Unless it's also something they'll try to profit from, like an asset for some game or whatever.

I don't think it is that rude unless the person is begging or demanding/forcing the artist to draw them.

ikr, ppl seem to be unaware that art is hard work. i aint no artist but its pretty dam obvious. they think artists can just sit their asses and draw anything they want just because they got the title. ive seen so many ppl use those excuses and its really startin to bum me out.

Well, I obviously don't go to college for an education.
I just need to find a desirable man with good status and be his trophy wife.

@RattyNails
Things seem to get hard when I am around

oh god pls dont ever ask a professional artist to draw you something for free
just because this doesnt involve numbers doesnt make what they do any less of a job
also the minimum wage in america is like 7 bucks so if they spend 5 hours on a drawing so its completely justified if they ask for at least 35 bucks for it even if you dont think its worth it

As an artist/animation student, I can say that it is incredibly annoying and rude. It's one thing for an artist to take requests by free will, but it's a whole different story when someone goes up to an artist and asks for free art. I especially dislike it when the beggar comes up with excuses like "But at least this is good practice for you", "I can't draw that well", "What do you mean you won't benefit from this?", "But it doesn't take you much time to do that!", etc. Oh I could come up with so many more cringeworthy examples.

No money, no deal.

Well yeah, no kidding. If the artist provides a commodity, he should be duly compensated. This implies that the artist should receive compensation based on skill and effort. Imagine that compensation is the product of skill and effort; if the artist sucks (skill=0-1), he should be compensated minimally, despite whatever effort he invested; if the artist invests little effort (effort=0-1), then he should be compensated minimally, despite his level of skill. Note that compensation doesn't necessarily imply pay; however, to work without any form of compensation is to be an idiot.
dats true but like i aint talkin about the artists who offer free art. im talkin about the peeps who take art as a serious hobby and are actually at a professional level.
i even see actual professionals, not here on basil but other sites who do art for a living but they still get idiots who expect them give them free art service.
ohh. well idk, many professional artists maybe haven't been recognized yet.
doing even the littlest things can get them to a whole new level.
it is not really rude to ask a professional to do free art or a quick sketch, but i guess it starts getting rude when they start to beg.

exactly man. i hate seeing idiots here asking for free drawings every chance they get. i mean wtf, if u think that artist is good, freakin pay them for their work. no one wants to work for free, ya know? unless they're a noob and just workin to gain future reputation and stuff.
if it someone who wants to personally pick or raffle someone to draw, then okay.
but if it's someone requesting an artist to draw on their free time, they should be able to wait patiently no matter how long it takes them.
i personally know alot of people who like to draw for experience and for the fun of it.
i think there's no need to be paid for something that was offered by the artists themselves. ^_^
thats like asking to be paid for doing a good deed or making something for someone. ( bracelets, hobby things, etc. )
