If you pay for someones food,
do you have the right / is it socially acceptable to take their leftovers, assuming they have any? And I don't mean like bringing a bag of chips to a party.
I was arguing with someone today about this. o_o
wait do you mean as in they don't finish and ask for it to be packed up to take home?
or they can't finish and it's either you eat it or it's getting thrown out
I assumed the latter when i answered
if you mean they want to pack it up and you say since you paid you're taking it home...that theoretically makes sense but it's kinda super awkward I'd think
They are not going to just leave it, they want to pack it up to take home.

You bought food for them for them to eat. It is now theirs, not yours so you have no right.
It would just be awkward if you did tbh.
Even if they want their leftovers? I didn't mean stuff they were just going to leave on the table.
if they wanted it, then no it's not socially acceptable..nor is it being a good friend unless you were still starving.
Depends on what it is.
yes you should also interrupt them as they eat and steal bites with your fork from their plate
if i use my $ for them, then hell yeah i want their leftovers. wasting is for pricks
ummmm...no

What do you not understand?
It really depends on the situation.
If you're paying for a first date, it wouldn't help with the impression when you start eating your girl/boy's leftovers ; unless the two of you are comfortable with it.
If you have been with someone for a long time, it might be more acceptable. My wife usually asks me to eat whatever she can't finish.
Haha, if you're married I think your situation is a little bit different than what I was envisioning.

They want to save it for a second meal later. Or something.

Leftovers?
I imagine it's okay, as long as you ask.
I mean, then it'll be kinda weird.
i think it is, as long as it's consensual
@RugbyBall: Oh. Well, I meant that, since I paid for the food and there are leftovers, why shouldn't I be able to eat it? You shouldn't care what society thinks. They don't know any better.
Theoretically, I'd say yes, you do have that right since you paid for it.
Is it socially acceptable? Hell no.
Why should I have to put on a show for society?
What the first guy said, Lols.
