Hacking, basil, and passwords

Hi, as I'm sure all of you have noticed the amount of people who are getting hacked is increasing. Furthermore it seems that many of those who get hacked comment that they don't visit questionable sites, give out their passwords, or do anything obvious that would allow their accounts to be hacked. I never been hacked, which I'm happy about, and I wonder if it's because the password I use for maplestory is different from all my other passwords, including the one I use for basil. If all other possibilities are found to be false then then only one remaining, even though rather unlikely, must be true: Maybe there is a leak on basil. I'm sure the group the runs basil is trustworthy, but there maybe one individual that works for basil, that is not. So, just a suggestion, if you use the same e-mail and password for basil and maplestory, maybe you should change your maplestory password.

Mods: This is not an attack against basil, but an attempt to prevent others from being hacked.
@MikeVit: It is. The only way to get hacked is, going to weird sites, giving info away or something else stupid.
not entirely true.
a friend of mine only visits basil, ms homepage, facebook, yahoo, and hotmail,
and he still got hacked.
and he didn't give any info away,
or done anything stupid.

That's very likely to be a large part of why you haven't been hacked, and it's extremely good advice for everyone to follow.

Unfortunately too many people use the SAME password for EVERYTHING because it's easier to remember.
The problem with that is if anyone gets hold of the password for ANY of your accounts, they'll have the password for all your accounts.
No doubt the first thing a hacker does is to try your e-mail account, Maple account, Basil account, whatever, to see if they can get in there too.
If you have different passwords for all those things, they won't be able to do anything to them.

And there HAVE been cases of people posting links on Basilmarket that contained keyloggers, trying to catch as many victims as possible before they're found out and deleted.
If anyone got hit with one of these, or keyloggers from any other sites, AND they had the same password for all their accounts it just makes the hacker's work easier for them.

I have a little notebook next to my computer with all my passwords written down so there's no chance of forgetting them. I don't have to worry about anyone here looking over my shoulder, but if anyone does keep a notebook it's important to keep that safe too, just in case.

Gmail is indeed probably the strongest e-mail provider. Don't use yahoo, they get hacked every few months.

Actually TS this doesn't seem too far-fetched, I got hacked back in 2009 or maybe tail end of '08 cant remember(there was a mass hacking spree going on back then) didn't give out my info to any questionable websites, download anything questionable, made sure password, pin(no pic back then), email for ms, and user id were secure, yet I still got hacked.

I remember hoards of people making threads on here about how they had just been hacked back then, and how they never did anything questionable that might have compromised their information, I also remember other people posting in those threads saying things like "oh you got hacked because you did something stupid" I was one of those people that thought that way too, until I found myself a victim of those hackings.

Soo then I thought, this scenario is happening to a lot of people, I keep reading threads about it on basil where 3/4 of the front page are filled with them, so could the hackings be attributed to basil? Idk, I want to think most probably not, but you never know. And I never found out. But the supposed explanation for this particular series of hackings was account info got leaked through a GM's account or something, though I find that as believable as it being a basil leakage, you never really know.
I also want to say that the first poster @StewieFg411 is the biggest idiot around Basilmarket
No, I'm sure he's not an idiot. The dominant way people get hacked is by being foolish. However StewieFg411 should acknowledge there are other ways.

Those people lie.

Someone was saying how they were innocent and have never hacked before blah blah blah and a GM showed proof of them hacking.

The people who have been hacked are probably also lying. They are probably too embarrassed to openly admit they went to THAT ONE SITE even though it was ONLY ONE SITE.
the MTS hack got alot of ppl.
No.

The MTS hack showed the ID not the password, email or PIC. People had the option to remove their ID so if you're still using that excuse then you are an idiot. My theory is that most people DO visit said sites and are too embarrassed to admit that they did. If there was a database leak we'd see much richer targets get hacked not just randomers.

You got it wrong, most sites are Http://
I think you are referring to Https:// , this is where the "s" stands for "secure"

@Antartida: Yup, people sometimes don't realize Nexon can get hacked , very unlikely but not impossible.

@MikeVit: Yup! Indeed you're right. Having a single Email for Maplestory only it helps alot, decreasing the chance of getting hacked.
5. Leaks in Nexon's data base.
Many companies have leaks in their databases, it is in the news often. If Nexon can have leaks in their databases, then so can basil. And I'd bet Nexon's securities are stronger then basils. Thus one would not want to use the same e-mail and password for both Nexon and basil.

Edit: I acknowledge that there are more hack attempts against Nexon then basil. But again, there could be employees at either simply looking at the databases.

There are many reasons why people gets hacked:

1. Naivety: People between the 6-12 years old are cluless about hacking or what hacking/hackers could do.
2. People don't have a strong password.
3. Their Antivirus/proteection softwares is/are outdated.
4. People don't usually scan their computer often.
5. Leaks in Nexon's data base.
6. Hackers finds a way to get peoples info through an in game feature/function. (perfect example: MTS)
