How to make friends at college orientation?

I'm the most awkward person ever. On top of that I'm super shy around new people. My orientation is coming up. How does a young male make friends at college orientation? I know that I should smile and look happy. Other than "where you from" and "what's your major" what do I say to strike conversations? How do I approach people without looking weird? How do I make myself look interesting so people will talk to me?

I was actually at my college orientation last week.
You'll be forced to do ice breakers. Just go through the ice breakers and talk to some people who you think would be cool.

When you are forced to sit through long seminars about what the word "consent" means, talk to the people you're sitting next to.
I actually met two pretty cool people that way. Then I met some of their friends and got accepted by a random group of people.
Just talk to people. If they like you, go with it. If not, then screw 'em. There are thousands of other people for you to meet. Unless you go to a small college.

I only made one friend during my college orientation. I think what happened with me was that everybody was a little nervous, but they were eager to talk to everyone to learn more about the school. It's a bit awkward to talk to them again once the semester starts, so with most ppl I just don't make eye contact

Walk up to somebody and say "I don't know anyone, and you don't know anyone probably. We have something in common, my name is..." And stick your hand out. If you don't get punched, your in good shape.

How did you make friends in high school? It's basically the same thing, strike up a conversation with someone and see if you have similar interests. It's much easier to talk to people during College Orientation because everybody there is new and wants to make friends as well.

Basically just that^ except for the Maplestory part. Not the best ice breaker in my personal experience except for ONE time. Also talk about very mainstream stuff(movies, music, TV shows etc) until you can narrow down to more specific interests.
