issues with connecting to wi-fi

my windows 8 laptop hasn't been able to connect to the internet at all since the latest windows update (the update was downloaded in the 8th, but i assume it was released about 2 days earlier). i'm pretty sure it's been caused by the update seeing as the only way I've found to make the internet work normally is by using system restore to restore it to before the update was installed. furthermore, the second time this has happened (yesterday, 16 july) was after a computer restart, during which I assume the update I deleted by using system restore was reinstalled. i already plan to turn off windows updates completely from now on, but I wanted to know if there are any ways to fix it just in case it wasn't caused by the update.

the connection says it's limited when I connect to it manually; if I let it connect automatically, the icon shows normally without any yellow triangles but says I'm not connected to any networks upon hovering over the icon.

troubleshooter says it wasn't able to automatically recognize proxy settings, though I don't remember the exact wording; changing the LAN settings to not automatically detect settings doesn't fix the issue, but it changes the troubleshooter message to just "wasn't able to determine the problem".

all of my network adapters seem to be up to date in drivers and working well as far as I can see; other devices connnected to the same router and network function normally.

i've used an proxy before, but deleting the proxy doesn't seem to have done anything to fix it; the problem still happened again after I deleted it.

i'm pretty sure it's not a virus: I've already ran an antivirus and anti-malware in my computer and both have come up with no results.

You do not need to turn off Windows Updates. Right click the problematic updates and select 'hide update'

run some antivirus/malware removal program like malwarebytes
reset your IE browser (if you use IE)
check your wireless SSID (name), and password
select your adapter from auto negotiate to 10mb full duplex or 100mb full duplex (see which one works) speed and duplex settings
if you're using a router/gateway with modem, power cycle your modem (unplug wait a min, plug back in)
