Why are people so stuck up about grammar?

*Why are people so stuck up about grammar and punctuation on YouTube comments and basil forum?*

In my opinion I think people have to realize grammar and punctuation in general communication isn't that a serious and huge issue. I admit my grammar and punctuation is horrible right now that's because it shouldn't matter as long the message is delivered. I'm not writing some professional document for the government, that I need to be 100% accurate with my grammar and punctuation. I got an 87% final mark average in grade 10 Academic English class and you can probably pick up a lot of grammatical errors in my recent sentences.

Why don't people learn how to use correct grammar?

That should be the real question.

Some people think it's okay to type illiterate on the internet because they just want a break from school, the way I see it.

But yeah, you're right, as long as the message is delivered, it doesn't matter on punctuation or grammar. As long as you have a good grade in english.

You gotta be honest though, seeing a bunch of illiterate people on the internet will have you worrying about today's education. Generally if you type horribly then people will judge you as some illiterate person who shouldn't be on the internet. I guess others would like to differ themselves from people who type bad to make them seem smarter.[/quote]

Because sometimes it's really hard to understand people that have grammar, but I don't usually pick on it.

Unless it's like ''omggg yur so dum liek obviusle one direction is betturr than the baetless ther so borringgggg omgggg. ''

But the one thing that I find annoying is when people mix up:
Your and You're,
Their, There, and They're,
and Two, To, and Too.

Not as much with it's and its cuz online idrc about that since I don't always throw in apostrophes or I just typo it.

Grammar and punctuation should only be addressed when it hampers the writer's efficiency in communicating, within a forum like structure. Otherwise, it's of no concern.

Otherwise, addressing such trivial concerns will often, and as seen here frequently do, hamper the flow of conversation and are much more counter productive than someone's lack of precision using grammar and/or punctuation.

Not quite sure how this is related to the topic...
If English isn't someone's first language than most people would be understanding of that if they just said so.

I don't rly mind wrong punctuation (unless there are absolutely NO dots and like 10 sentences are fused into one.. it's horrible to read since I "feel" tone in my head when reading - so when I read an endless paragraph it sounds so monotonous until the end finally comes x.x)

But as for grammar... Being on the internet is not an excuse to suddenly write like a retard. If you get used to writing things wrong and don't put effort on here (also, you're talking to other people here so paying at least a little paying attention to it would be good...) then you MIGHT have issues out of the net.

It also irks me when people misuse there/their/they're and you're/your... I don't think that if they get used to subconsciously write like this that they can normally write it properly without putting effort.

Also is it THAT bad to hit a few more keys - or to pay attention to not twist letters? Why do you wanna turn your brain off on the net in the first place.
Messing up grammar can be fun at times and talking like a jerk can be funny (I WANT OM NOMS! ME HUNGRAYYY RAWWRRR) but when it's not an exception and instead a rule and it's part of their personality and allday writing it's just rly sad.
It's mostly teens looking illiterate. It makes them look immature and stupid - whether they CAN write it correctly or not, for all I know they could be too dumb to do it.

Can't stand dem qurlz n boiz talkn lik dis n feelin so great bout it bby oh mah gawd i sexy i writez da tard nyukkah grammurrr ERRRMAHHGEERRRD whadda dot nevr hurd o it y u fail at reedin da dots dis mo den juzz 1 sentnz gawd u so stupeed boii n u no wat MA BOYFREN IS SEXAYYY N SEXIER DAN UUURS WE BEEN DATIN FO DA 3 DAYZ N DOOD HE SO PURFECT ME FINKS ME GON MARRY DAT MAN

You're right in the sense that simply delivering a message is fine, but you forget that you're talking about the social aspect of language.
It isn't simply WHAT one says that matters; people always note HOW one says what they say. If you're going to argue with me on Facebook and spell "definitely" as "deffinately", I'm going to clap you up for that. It's a blunder that begs to be exploited, and I can embarrass you for it, so why not? Basically, grammar provides credibility. A higher level of grammar (which, fair to say, means a better command of the language) will gravitate an argument in your favour. Could you imagine having a debate on politics or economic fallacies with a man who can't use a semi-colon properly? Their argument loses traction because of a simple grammatical mistake.

I agree with this. If a person can't get the message just because of a few typos then they're the stupid one.
