help me decide between a laptop or desktop

i have a budget of around 500 dollars and i want to be able to run games like Nether or LoL at very high settings + anti aliasing as very smooth settings.
i know that desktops have better performances overall but if theres a laptop that i can find on craigslist or something thats cheap and can run as just as quick id rather go with laptops because of its mobility.
my dad wants me to build a desktop instead of buying a laptop
and if i do build a desktop, can anyone suggest any decent gpu out there?
thanks <3 <3
At the moment my current laptop is able to run LoL AT very high and anti aliasing at 60FPS which I bought it for 400. Its and MSI Fx400 but its having problems running
games like Nether and BF3 properly even at their lowest settings. If youre wondering why I wanna buy a new laptop/desktop is because this laptops pretty outdated and I just want a better one thats all.
Your laptop's results aren't even that surprising. It has a GeForce GT 325M outputting on a 1366x768 display resolution.

Since you're able to cover Windows, that gives you about $100 more to work with. You'll be able to get a computer that can play League on Very High at 1920x1080. Unfortunately, based on my estimates with $500 and assuming new retail parts, you're looking at some combination of an Intel Pentium or AMD Vishera quad-core or hex-core FX and a low-end video card like the GeForce GTX 750 or Radeon R7 250X. That setup will play Borderlands 2 with roughly Medium settings and will struggle at times with BF4 on Low.

I'm still working on a parts list to make sure where the budget falls.

League of Legends' graphics is not comparable to Nether or Battlefield 3. Those two games are on a different level in the graphics department. You need to expand your budget to at least $800 if you want to run Nether and BF3 on medium to high setting.

League of Legends isn't exactly a graphically intense game. Any laptop/desktop with an Intel HD Graphics 4000 graphics card can run it at high to very high settings.
You'll have to either expand your budget or buy used parts. $500 won't get you a laptop, desktop, or the parts to pull off Very High on League.

Answer as many questions as you are willing. The information you provide will narrow down the potential computers I look at.

What country/state do you live in? California
Can you order online? If you cannot order online, what stores are around you? I can order online and there are Frys stores nearby me
Do you already have a monitor, keyboard, and/or mouse? If you have a monitor, what is its screen resolution? I already own a monitor keyboard and a mouse. I am unaware of the monitors screen resolution since its not in my possession at the moment but will soon be.
Do you need an operating system such as Windows 7 or Windows 8? No I have that covered already.

How much hard drive space do you want? At least 500GB
Are there any other games you play or want to play? Borderlands 2 Battlefield 4 Vindictus
What other programs do you use? Sony Vegas 11 for videos
Do you have any preferences or restrictions for a computer case(features, looks, etc.)? None

Mention any other special requests you may have. Be detailed.
