Maplestory effects are so over the top and ugly
I can't stand seeing a giant cluster hell of random buffs/effects/nx in heavily populated locations. I've become to fundamentally disgusted by it that I've anviled more than half of my equips to level 30 equips or noobless lith harbor clothes.
I dropped my sengoku effects recently as well because the stats are just not worth that ugly 3 man spirit following me. Along with that I got rid of my DABR and replaced it with another ring that had no effect which was even worse (for now at least). I haven't even bothered turning my weapon into a soul weapon yet. Why am I always sacrificing damage to remove these ugly over-done effects? I'd totally pay for a transparent effect option.
If you're curious about how my character looks, let's just say you'd walk by and assume I was level 30 when in reality I'm past 200, and I'm happy that way.
WABR, Soul weapon, sengoku, 3 pets, giant cash shop angel wings and some other over done cash shop effect. You look like a walking 5 man band. Bleh, and seeing them flash jump all over the place and effects tele-ing with them </3 </3

I can't believe there was a time when Shegoku totems first came out I wanted them for the effect. Hate them with a passion now. I just don't understand why there is no showing on or off option to them </3
And Androids. Why nexon why.... specially my childhood android, it hurts my eyes.
Happy to hear soul weapons will have a toggle option.
Edit: Just realized my outfit is a bit clustered but that is the furthest it gets

Storebought cookies VS homemade cookies.
They both taste good, but the fact that one is home-made makes it taste better.
It's all part of the "dumbing down" of Maplestory to make it play like an Xbox video game, trying to attract more players.
It's easier to add flashy whiz-bang graphics to an old game than it is to come up with new, fresh ideas to keep improving the game itself.
There's always been some pretty ugly animation we've had to deal with, like I had to immediately buy a transparent NX hat to cover the first Zakum helmet I ever owned, but ever since Maplestory 2.0 started around the Big Bang time, it's gotten so bad you sometimes can't even find yourself on the screen in the middle of all the "wowie zowie" special effects in a crowd.
I put the annoying effects on when I'm killing things. Otherwise, they're just hanging in my inventory, using up space. o.o

Hmm...I'm afraid I don't quite follow. (Or at least, nothing beyond what "too polished" would communicate.) Any specific examples?
Those oversized gigantic angel/devil wings bother the hell out of me >.< I still like nx but i dont exactly like the ones that stand out so much but because im low on mesos, its hard to buy nx that makes my character look simple but pretty at the same time. If anvils were for mesos, i'd fo sho anvil some of my equips to lvl 30 stuff

The maps feel like instant microwavable food. Clean, efficient, and pretty packaging, but not very full of heart like home-made food is, if that makes sense.

What about it, exactly? Personally I dislike the new town redesigns - they seem too polished, if such a thing even exists. Perhaps that's just nostalgia, though.
The effects get a bit ridiculous sometimes and believe me, it's hilarious to use it all at once during a GM jump quest event although not exactly nice if you're on the receiving end of it though.

@napoleon97: Nothing. The brightest thing I have is my weapon. Once I got to a higher level I was going to anvil all of my items back into pre-bb dexless sin.

sometimes I have my jungle pet effect (white tiger, porcupine, monkey)

I agree with you. Which is why I have a simple style. I actually hate having pets + android too >.<

THIS! I always forget to put them back on as well >.< Once I accidentally went bossing with a level 30 wand bcs I thought it looked cute in town, however then I realized I was a bishop so I didn't care

MapleStory has always prioritized fireworks over substance; it's just become more obvious with the addition of cosmetic effects on in-game gear and an ever-increasing selection of NX items.
Fundamentally, I don't have a problem with flash. I do, however, take issue with it when it is used to cover up bad spriting work - for instance DBs, whose animations really feel half-baked and at times downright choppy (even if it is for good reason).
I usually take those off when I'm just chilling and re-equip them when I'm bossing or training. I agree though, it's a visual clusterf**k.

I don't know what your character has around him in-game but the way it looks like on basil atm is my limit. Anything further than that is an eye sore.
