judging from that comic, i should not do the kerning mall quests (i threw away my earring at level 50)

You should make more comics pointing out the quirks of Maple. You did a good job on pointing out the messed up things encountered with this Kerning Square comic.

They aren't actually that hard to get, they just take a little bit of time. Basically, you head over to Kerning Mall (you can access it from the Kerning Subway) and finish all the quests in the area. Once you've finished, you will receive the Free Spirit Piercing, which give +1 to all stats, but only has 4 slots (compared to the regular 5) and cannot be traded unless you SoK it. These limitations have earned it the reputation you see displayed in the comic.
