So lately I've been sleeping wayyyyyy to much

So yeh as the title says lately I've been sleeping in way to much.. I do have a sort of bad sleeping pattern as in i sleep till around 10-12 after staying up to 1-3 in the morning but i tend to get 9hours of sleep each night. But lately every time I'm able to sleep in I'm asleep for like 11 hours or 16hours even sometimes and i only get woken up when someone calls me or something. I was wondering why this is happening if anyone could help O:

I have Major Depressive Disorder. If you think you are depressed, get a therapist. I just wish I was happy again...

@HolyMythos: I just wish my body wasn't a prick and picked ONLY weekends.
What if my body is weird and chooses to work like that only on weekends?
On a school day I sleep at 1:00 AM and get up at 5:00AM - 6:00AM just fine.
But on Saturday and Sunday, I'll need 12+ hours of sleep
The answer should be obvious; you're trying to make up for the sleep you don't get during the week.

The same thing happens to me. Our bodies have grown on the schedule of stay awake during the day and sleep during the night. The brain actually helps aid this process by excreting Melatonin. Melatonin is a natural compound that your brain releases to help aid in sleep. Melatonin has a light dependence (or lack there of) to where your brain produces more Melatonin when it is dark rather than it is light. Melatonin levels peak in the middle of the night and then begin to drop off as the night ends.

Since you stay up until the middle of the night, you more than likely are affected by artificial light, which can be anything from a TV screen, computer monitor, lightbulbs, or even your cell phone or portable game device. This causes the brain to produce less melatonin. Not only does this make falling asleep harder to do but it also makes your sleep less "potent". This means you tend to sleep longer in order to get the full rest that you would normally get in eight hours.

If you combine this with the fact that some humans just have a longer circadian clock and naturally tend to need sleep for longer than eight hours, you can get individuals, like you and I, that need eleven+ hours of sleep a night. I'd suggest buying Melatonin pills and taking them an hour before bed. You can find 1mg pills at any store that has a wide drug selection. No prescription needed. They have 5mg tablets but don't get them; too much melatonin can actually reverse the sleep schedule and make you not sleep.

Try to sleep earlier, like 11-ish.

Depression is something along the lines of constantly feeling sad, incompetent, hopeless, etc. for more than two weeks. I don't really remember; you can look up the symptoms.
I know what depression is i was just wondering about that exact symptom

@ISnowyI: I can't really tell if it's Dysthymia or depression... I have the symptoms of both >< I am growing to as well and i do have a bad sleep schedule to. I have most of that stuff you mentioned :X
