There are over 250 beastmaster Quests (includiing the one's the questline makes you complete, ie. Patheon, Ellin Forest.) I got bored of the after Pantheon.) So no they aren't needed, but you do get whistles and I think a title at the end?
if you want the whistles then yes (but you can buy it from neville). if not then no, you can roam around.
