You Lose Your Memories

Let's just say I was found lying on the streets with nothing but clothing on me. Someone comes and asks if I need help and soon finds out I do not have any memory of who I was and where I came from. The person calls the police as a way of helping me.

What will the police usually do? Do I have to go to the precinct with them? Do I get locked up or sent to the hospital? Or do I just fill out some files and they send me back into the streets? Anyone have any ideas? I really need to know what are the procedures. Thanks.
I'm writing a story for class about a man who acts like he has no memories. I can't write on if I don't know what they actually do with him. So you're saying the hospital will keep him living there for free as long as he doesn't have any memories and they don't know who he is, despite he operates just like a normal human being?
Well why would they lock him up? There's no punishment for losing your memory.
Realistically, they would keep him in the hospital for evaluation.

But if you want some drama in your story, just say the hospital lets him go and he goes on into life as a new person. Then, he slowly gains his memory back through small things in his environment that remind him of who he is.
Okay. So they send me to the hospital. I am perfectly fine as in I can do everything like a normal person. Only problem is that I have no memory. And they can't find ANY info about me since I have no ID or anything. Now what? And I'm asking if I get locked up because I am going around with no identification.
