How to catch a rat?

I have a rat (maybe rats) in my house and i needa know how to catch it. I've used regular rat traps, the ones that snap, but all has been unsuccessful. How do i catch these possibly disease infested rodents?

Avocado on Snap-traps works good.

Rat glue is useless for rodents, but it's great for snakes, lizards, crickets, and roaches. Even if you do successfully trap a rat in a glue trap, what are you going to do? You can't release it back into the house and leaving it die to exposure either on the trap or in the trash can is more inhumane than death by a snap trap.

@ above: They pretty much eat anything, but peanut butter is cheaper and happens to be a reliable bait.

I found this to be quite cool.

Employ the Ra-Karcharz. No Radz here.

OT: Cheese and a mouse trap/glue? Unless your particular rats don't like cheese...

I mean, there's this special type of glue, specifically for catching rats, it's brown and it doesn't dry up. I should have been more specific, sorry ;-;
Oh lol, my bad.

Rat glue on cardboard, asian style.
What did I just watch Bev? LOL

Get glue, paste it on cardboard, lay bait in the center, place the cardboard somewhere where the rat occasionally goes.
Or...get a pokeball and catch it like a man?
Glue? Rofl.
First off, it would probably dry up by then. Secondly, its not like the rat will be instantly stuck the moment it stepped on it. xD

Totally reminded me of that movie I watched ages ago called MouseHunt (or something)

OT: Look for places where you think they come out of/live in and block the hole

Just when I was about to suggest being humane...
Get... rat poison? o.o Or do what Jonzieee mentioned, cover a slab of cardboard with strong glue, put bait in the center of it, and the rats (if the glue is strong enough) will get stuck in the cardboard and DIE from starvation. Yayyyyy
