Ds Lite shutting down.

Hey guys,
so a few minutes ago, a little piece broke off my Nintento Ds Lite, apparently it's a part that keeps the top screen locked in place, so it doesn't go open further than you want (if you know what I mean, I'll include a picture tomorrow if that'd help). That wasn't really a problem, until my Ds kept shutting down immediately after I powered it on.. The bottom screen flashed briefly (white) and the green light stays on for a second or two but then nothing happens. I tried plugging it in (it's charging now), but for now it's not helping.
Is there any way I could fix my Ds or can these two problems be related? (I read about other people having the same problem without any visible damage on the outside)

Thanks a lot.

Sometimes, when I bend my screen to the back as far as it goes, it stays on, but as soon as I move the screen too much, it shuts off.
Is there still any hope?

tape a convincing picture of the game your using[actual gameplay] to your ds lite screen, and try to hope the guy your trading it in to is stupid

Maybe theres something wrong with your battery or charger? Idk. I had the same problem where I'd plug it in and the charging light would show up for like a split second and then turn off again, but that was because I was in a different country that required a different voltage to charge the ds.

Buy a 3ds if you can't find a lite, it's backwards compatible so it'll play all your old ds games too in addition to 3ds games as well.

I'm hoping I can still find a Ds Lite, otherwise it'll be at least €100 for a Dsi..
Should I buy a 3Ds if I can't find a Lite?
@Secondary and @NiceGuys: I don't have a lot of money, so I'm not sure if the 3Ds is really worth it. As long as I can keep playing the pokémon games, I'm fine.
@punx: Can it still play the same games? Because that's my only worry actually.
Yup! I never played my ds so I gave it to my sister after her lite broke
The only differences are the size/weight/colors, the original ds is alot louder than the lite, and the ds lite is brighter

Edit: omg whats a 3ds

@FatJason: Apparently, I was just hoping I could actually fix it with some duct tape like you said and also that it would last at least a few years longer.
@punx: Oh, didn't know that, maybe I'll buy an old one then, thanks.

I just checked and repairing it costs almost as much as a new one..
That's what I was worried about I didn't actually know how much it costs

Those suck. I had my Nintendo ds for 7+ years and it functioned properly the whole time while my sister's ds lite broke after a year
@Adele: About a month or two after Pokémon Platinum came out, so almost exactly 3 years..
