im pretty up to date with most events but still confused on what it is that i need

Honestly its a lot easier to get a footing now than ever before because you can actually perfect your own gear that you can buy at a relatively low price(faf weapon are really cheap clean and is what you use for end game) and then scroll with event scrolls and cube with free reward points/boss cubes.
