so because someone says that "you lose the item", you go as far as saying "herp derp" to the first guy, then a second someone comes in and says "it doesn't dissappear, and then you believe him.

You don't lose an item when you use the anvil.

the classic weapons since the beginning of the game look way better anyway, but that's probably just me. the new high level weapons look so uncreative, just a bunch of random shapes hashed together. i like the lionheart and raven horn stuff but for the most part, everything under 120 has so much more charm in their design
