Grip or drift
So today at school during some free time, I was reading Initial D on my laptop and my friend asked, "Why would they drift? Isn't that slower than driving normally?"
For some reason, I couldn't really think of any reason why drifting would be as fast as gripping the road. Could anyone enlighten me on this?

it can in theory. but i've tried it and when you keep the grip in the corner you might lose some speed but since you dont use as much of the road its still faster. And when in a race its better to grip cause drifting will cause you're tires to lose rubber meaning you'll need to change them faster. And more grip on your tires will result in faster exiting from corners.
But drifting looks and is more fun.
PS: sorry for typo's. english isn't my first language.
@Derpitydurp: Haha, I was trying to allude to Mario Kart, but now that you reminded me of Kirby Air Ride, that was an awesome game.
If you drift hard enough you charge up boost and when you let go you shoot forward.
No loss of inertia. Different angles can be executed.
Drifting is really just for show/cooler.
The point of drifting is to look cool really.
Well I can't answer that question but Im curious why you're in school already.
