I Bought a Car Today

The second official day of car shopping. My mom and I drove to New Jersey, Connecticut, and Long Island just to look at 4 cars. We had insurance cards for all 4 cards we were going to look at,

We started the day in New Jersey to check out this KICK ASS Mazda 6. This car was a beauty: black, a nice spoiler, aluminum rims. It was 2005 with only 51k miles as well, literally babied. I get on the lot, the guy working there is wearing an AC Milan Jersey. This lot has literally 186 perfect reviews online, so I felt like they were good people. We get on the lot and were greeted immediately. As we're looking for the Mazda on the lot, I caught a glimpse of the Mitsubishi Lancer that I thought was sold. The Lancer was my #1 car until a few days ago, so it was sad to see it. It really looked like a sweet car and was only $500 more than the Mazda, but I wouldn't be able to go through with it given what I've heard about Lancers.

Anyway, we're checking out the Mazda6. It's sweet. I sit in it, everything works, it feels good. The steering wheel had a cover that had grooves on it, it felt good in my hands, We have the guy pull it out of the lot for a test drive as we sit in the office. Lot price was $7995, internet price of $7495. The lot wasn't going to take care of the DMV stuff and taxes, so we would have walked off the lot with the car for $7650.

Test drive time. Hop in, take it around the block a few times, get a little K-turn action going, this car is smoother than my mom's Camaro. It's heaven. Drive it back on the lot and give the car another once-over. Then my heart started breaking. Rear right wheel. Rust. The brake discs are rusted, but that would come off once the car is driven a bit. But this rust is around the wheel well, it's bad. It's literally crumbling as I run my hand across it. Bring it up to the guys' attention, they say it's nothing. They get down on the ground and say there's no rust under the car. I crouch down. Rust everywhere.

NOPE.

Got the hell out of there. I was heart broken. That car handled like a dream. With so little miles too! I was bummed the whole car ride to Connecticut.

So after getting some Burger King and gas, we made our two hour trip to Connecticut to check out two early 2000's Mustangs. Just for the dealership to tell me they sold both of them. SDFKSLFNSADNFKSJANFKJSNFDKJNAS Another setback. I literally checked their website this morning before I left and they were on it. They said they were sold 3 days ago. God damn man. Went all the way to Connecticut for nothing. I left my number in case they got new inventory and left. They had really nice cars there, just not ones in my $10,000 price range. They were good people though, from Brooklyn.

Okay so we then drove to this one lot in Long Island to check out this dirt cheap Elantra. $6900 for a 2010 Elantra, blue. It wasn't as cool as a Mazda6 or Mustang, but you know, it was practical. I felt pressured to buy it after the long day and just wanted to get it over with. I saw the car and it looked, you know, like an Elantra. Whatever. There were two stickers on the windows, a butterfly and a pink Yankees logo, so I could tell it was girl-owned. The price was dirt cheap. My mom got short with the guy because she thought he was trying to rip her off just because "her friend says they could knock $2,000 off the car." Anyway, we completed the bill of sale and I left a $500 deposit. I actually love the car, but I'm just tired.

I'm now the proud owner of a 2010 Elantra that won't be ready until Wednesday.

Yay :^)
Lucky you had 10k. Bro, if you had given me a little commission I could've found the perfect car for you for less than 10k on craigslist. Used car lots are a RIPOFF. That Mazda was really worth like $4,000. I could've found probably an excellent condition 2008 Mazda 6 with 30-50k miles for you, for about 8-10 grand.

But good for you for being practical. I'm not sure about Hyundai reliability though...good luck.

Just an example I found in two minutes: https://denver.craigslist.org/cto/5161405861.html
I took a quick peek at Craigslist, but I really just wanted to deal with a professional so I wouldn't have to go to the DMV.

@xfaceiess: It has 67k. Not the best for a 5-year-old car, but solid.

Honestly would've stuck with the Mazda. Especially since it was way under your 10k price range. You could've repaired the wheel wells yourself or sent it to a body shop. Since it's a car you are going to be riding for a while, I would've chosen the one I loved riding the most. Just my opinion though.
