If you want a cheap pet, you should def do the pet tutorial!
Water of life is only 2k I believe? Much cheaper than the 5-7k nx for the usual pet.

With this patch Nexon introduced a new guide for new maplers named Tot's Guide.
In it, you are given a series of mini tutorials you have to click through to learn the "ins and outs" of Maplestory. This includes cash shop items and what it can do for you. One of these tutorials features smegas, where you are given one free smega to test out (and thus completing the tutorial) and you gain a reward for completing it.. another smega.

Also note, you should go through all of them because you get some pretty cool things.
- NX Ducky Cap (2 weeks)
- NX T-Shirt Top (2 weeks)
- NX Jeans Bottom (2 weeks)
- Puffy Sheep Pet (2 weeks) + 100pt closeness food
- Gachapon ticket (But I think its rigged to give pots only...)
- VIP Hair (not usable on Androids)
- Quest Deliverer Thomas

There may be more, not sure...
Also, when you finish all the mini tutorials, you receive a Green Geko Chair (actually pretty cute!) and a medal (+5atk/matk and +3all? or something like that..)
