high school xc

the cross country coach this year says winter track is basically mandatory for all runners. I feel like I won't have enough time for it because of the workload and stuff (though I'm doing spring track), but that's probably not a legit reason to get out of it. how do I explain this situation to him
thanks

If you can't handle the load of your sport, then you shouldn't be doing it. Honestly, there's no way your high school work load is that much. I took 14 AP's in my high schol career and still managed to run 3 hours a day including weekends year round (even though it was just a fall season sport and year round training was not required) without a super good work ethic.

Most coaches should understand that academics > sports but if you got one of those insane coaches then the best way to do so is find a compromise. I think your coach's goal is to just keep your legs going because running is all about staying in shape. I think the best solution would be to go and be up front about it, tell your coach the issue and try to stick around when you do have time. I'm actually a volleyball player and right now, my coach is running our conditioning. He wants me to be there to stay in shape and be ready for season, but I've told him that I can't invest too much time because I wanna keep my grades up, other priorities, etc. I only show up for certain days and he's totally fine with it. Hopefully the same works out for you

The coach is just telling you that scholarships are available for athletes.

"Sports are overall just a huge waste of time and money, so I'm not gonna be on cross country."
I don't see why its so hars to justify quitting a sport.
