Do spikes really help

I've been thinking about getting spikes for track/cross country and whatnot, and I've been running with soled flats all along. Do these actually make a noticeable difference in comfort/speed? Is it worth buying a decent pair if I'm only an average runner?

Yeah. You'll want different sets of spikes depending on the event you're running, though. Long distance requires less (4-6), while sprints call for more (6-10).

yes, only wear spikes during meets; heavy use can hurt your legs
wear your trainers when you train
for any running event spikes shave off a decent amount of time.

yes. 0.25inch pyramid spikes help so much if you're an elite runner.
shaved at least a few seconds using spikes.
