[header]What is a Permanent Beginner?[/header]
A permanent beginner is a Mapler who NEVER gets a job advancement and stays as a Beginner, Noblesse, Legend, Evanginner, or Citizen for the rest of his/her Mapling career. There are other Beginner subclasses (Campers, Islanders, Roadies, etc.) and builds (pure HP, pure DEX) as well.

Choosing to become a permanent beginner is a very controversial decision. I mean, why become a character that has no skills, limited equipment choices, and low attack strength? Well, there are many reasons: they're different, they're cool, they're "pro," but just in case you're not convinced, here's a full list of the pros (and cons) of staying jobless:

Pros:
[*] They don't lose EXP when you die. That means you can do things like reach towns by dying halfway during the trip, and explore high-level areas without risk.
[*] They're unique! You don't see permanent beginners in MapleStory every day.
[*] They get cheap taxi fares on Victoria Island (100 mesos instead of 1,000 mesos).
[*] A few, unique, Beginner-only equips.

Cons:
[*] Their damage sucks, due to lack of damage-multiplying skills.
[*] They do not have any special skills. See above.
[*] Their HP is extremely low (unless you go pure HP), so they can die a lot while training.
[*] Potion usage can cause the class to become expensive. See above.
[*] Anyone (and I mean ANYONE) can kill-steal them. You'll have to rely on peoples' goodwill to train in crowded areas.
[*] Their equipment choices... are extremely limited. You will have to wear common equipment, which offers far fewer choices than class-specific equipment. However, you still have a lot of choices for your weapon and hat.
[*] Other players sometimes make fun of you or simply do not understand the class.
[*] Being kicked from parties is common when people realize your damage and/or HP. Players can no longer kick a party member in the middle of a Party Quest, however Beginners tend to be kicked shortly after the first completed/failed PQ.

Notes:
[*] After the Legend patch, each mob's exp/drop rate was changed. Now, If you are 10 levels higher (or more) than the monster, your exp/drop rate is decreased. The exp/drop rate is decreased for each level you are 10-20 levels above the monster. The final outcome at 20 or more levels higher than the monster is a 60% reduction of the exp/drop rate, with no chance of mesos/equips existing at 20 or more levels higher.
However, world tour mobs dodged this thing completely, so these maps are not affected by the exp/drop rate reduction.

[*] Giant Potions are great ways to train, especially if you prefer training alone. You deal about 1000% damage with each hit (plus, you have jump damage and touch damage). Your range increases immensely and you gain 100% stance (no knockback). The only downside is that these only last one minute and they are only recommended at high levels as they can become quite expensive (3-5m each in FM depending on your world). <Video>

[*] Since the Ascension patch, leveling has become much easier and quicker as a result of PQing. The monsters in PQs are now set to the average level of all your party members. Each party quest has a max level the monsters can reach, which prevents them from being too high leveled. Make sure to keep party members around the same level as you so the monsters stay within your level range and you will receive party EXP from them (this is true for the most part, but will be explained further as you level more).
- NOTE: You can only do a single PQ ten times a day. Even if you fail the PQ or disconnect during it, it counts as an attempt. Also, players can no longer kick a party member in the middle of a Party Quest, so no more failed PQs just to kick you or someone else!

[*] Yes! Beginners can participate in Crimsonwood Keep Party Quest (CWKPQ) at level 90+ ! Although Beginners cannot help much during the actual party quest, it is quite helpful to do in order to get yourself a Mark of Naricain (MoN).

[*] Because you don't have weapon mastery, you're free to fight with ANY weapon of your choice. Jobbed characters are stuck with one or two weapon types; Beginners can use any warrior weapon class and Daggers effectively. All weapons used by a Beginner have a 1.20x multiplier regardless.
~@icy89firaga:

[*] When it comes down to it, STR% is the better idea because not only does STR% boost your defense (since 1 STR is like 1.5 defense or something now), but STR% also greatly speeds up your kills (in a decent amount; something like 2-5% won't do anything).
~@icy89firaga:

[header] [/header]
Beginner Damage Range Formula:
Maximum Damage = 1.20 -- (4--STR + DEX) -- (Attack÷100)
Minimum Damage = Maximum damage ÷ 5, Rounded Up

[*] Note that where STR, DEX, and Attack are mentioned, they mean the totals of those stats.

Example:
A level 20 Beginner that has a total STR of 104, total DEX of 11, and total weapon attack of 42 would have the following range:

Maximum = 1.20 -- (4--104 + 11) -- (42÷100)
1.20 -- (427) -- (0.42)
1.20 -- 179.34 = 215.208
Round that down to 215.

Minimum = Maximum ÷ 5
215 ÷ 5 = 43

This level 20 Beginner would have a range of 43 ~ 215.

[*] Level 1-10 are quick, and even future classed characters go through these levels, so they are not much of a challenge. Simply hang around Maple Island and finish all the tutorial quests. Remember, you can keep Mia's Last Training not turned in and remain in the pig's map for the best EXP on Maple Island. Stay until level 10-15 before leaving Maple Island to get a feel for Beginners and get a start on leveling.

[*] Levels 10-20 are also quite easy. An experienced player can easily level a beginner to 20 in a matter of an hour or so. I would recommend staying in Henesys and training on the assorted Mushrooms there. Funded Beginners can move to Rotting Skeletons at around level 17 if they have correct equips and enough potions. Since the Big Bang revamped the accuracy table, make sure you are training on monsters no more than ±3 levels of your level. This ensures decent accuracy along with decent EXP.

[*] These levels start out simple, but 26-30 can be a shock as the exp needed to level spikes in preparation for the second job. No worries, though. They won't be too tough.
Your first 3 party quests open at Level 20: Cracked Dimension (lpq), Moon Bunny (hpq), and First Time Together (kpq). It is HIGHLY recommended that if you choose to participate in these quests during these levels to never go party with any player above level 40. Ideally, you should always PQ with people within 10 levels of yourself, except in later circumstances, which will be explained later.

[*] Congratulations on achieving your 2nd no-job! Levels continue to require increasingly more amounts of EXP as you begin 2nd job. I would recommend training solo until the late thirties, as this seems to be the quickest way to level. As you approach forty, more people will be willing to add you to party quests, such as LPQ. If you can find a party similar to you level, head to LPQ as it becomes the quickest leveling until the late 70s!

[*] Congratulations on level 50! Many new equips become available to you at this level and many funded Beginners choose to purchase their first zhelm at this level. These levels truly become exciting! If you have chosen to solo grind your way since level 1 to now, here come your first "hell levels." The best EXP mobs are scarecrows, although their map tends to be highly populated. If you can find a party willing to add you, this can allow for quick EXP and map protection. Aim to occupy the top left platform in the chimney map. About 3 mobs spawn on this platform, which tends to be the perfect amount for many Beginners, especially as they reach the high 50s. [*] As you continue leveling, the EXP required to level greatly increases again as you head for 3rd job at level 70. Oly Olys, Rodeos, and Charmers are all overlooked mobs. These are great mobs since their EXP never drops and the maps are nearly always unoccupied, allowing for rare KS-ing. Again, if you prefer to PQ, continue in LPQ, no matter how bland it has become, it provides the best EXP, especially as you perfect your skills in the PQ.

[*] Congratulations on achieving your 3rd no-job! Now that you are level 70, many new PQs open up and some new equips become available. If you can find a low enough leveled party, head straight to PPQ, but otherwise, continue in LPQ. The mobs in LPQ will remain at the maximum level of 69, no matter how high leveled your party is now, so this may be another strategy. Also, avoid MPQ until higher levels, as it requires higher skill and parties are usually around level 100+. Again, Rodeos and Charmers are two great mobs to take into account since their EXP will remain the same as you level.

I have a question about potentials
In the notes, you said that str% is the most desirable, but what about on weapons?
Can you make a list of what weapon potential lines are beneficial for a beginner?
I kinda doubt str% would be the best choice for that

Bump ~ to keep thread from auto-locking.

Update:
It may seem that I haven't updated the guide in awhile, but I'm waiting for the next big patch and I promise I will release much more information.
I haven't been on Maple as much, and I only get on now to check out new changes to keep this guide updated. If anyone has anything they would like to add (big or small) feel free to PM me on Basil or contact me any other way you can.

Quests for 40-50.
The kerning mall questline. And i suppose the KFT quest line would be good for the 60? Level range. I forget what level it is. Same for the ariant quests.

Quests for level 10-20.

There are now numerous low level quests to do in various job towns in this level range.

I can't remember names, but Ayan in Perion, Athena Pierce in Henesys, Dark Lord in Kerning City, Dances with Balrog in Perion, Miss Ming Ming in Henesys, and the fairies of Ellinia now offer very rewarding (exp wise) quest lines.

Seriously, if you do Ayan's quest at level 10, you'll be level 12 in a few seconds.
Nexon seriously revamped quests.

You should look them up on Hidden-Street. That site is up to date on them.
If you're still confused on the quests I mean, just make a level 10 character and check your available tab. Chances are if you haven't seen the quest name ever before, it's the quest lines I'm talking about.

The only caution: READ THE STINKIN' QUEST DIALOGUE BEFORE SPAMMING NPC CHAT. You could easily accidentally job yourself since most of these quests have you running in and out of job advance NPC maps.

Uh, how come I can do ludi pq over 20 times a day?
I keep checking the pq limit and the stop sign just says I have 10more tries, even when I went 5 times alrdy.
Glitch?

Basil should add a "like" or "thanks" feature for posts.
I'd break my mouse clicking it for this one.

Oh and david:

I know I may be overselling giant potions, but...I mean, geez, if you have the money, it's nearly as good as leeching.

I can train on skeles minidungeon just as efficiently as I can on my BaM using giant potions (1-2 hit KOs). 1 potion = 1~2% at my level on 1x exp using these potions, and they're getting even less expensive.
Only downsides is they only last 1 min, they stack in only 10, and they're 2~4mil each. But my god, they're godly for training.

noob guide...

lvl 20~50 rotten skeles,

lvl 50 or higher - scarecrows/ gryphons
lvl 55 + hoodoo / voodoo.

and train with farmiliars, they help incredibly.
TRUE FACTS

EVENT quests, good exp, DOn't get caught in abusing a glitch event quests.... u_u

party quests are alright, i mostly prefer pyramid pq, with a party.

I remember when my beginner was considered high level, now people twice my level are like the average.

I removed the one Travis is referring to, it's not the EXP one, don't worry.

Also @ all above, I updated most of your suggestions, thank you for your input.

jesters aren't aggressive anymore, as well as scarecrows(although if i recall correctly they still deal magic damage.) jesters just deal touch damage.

another great option to add from 91-100(or 91-110) can be mr. anchor. similar hp to jesters, selkie's and slimy's as well as experience. the map is also similar(unless you're at mp3, then it'll be bigger there.) it's not aggressive, and i don't think they attack with magic(but i'll get on after the maintenance to verify that they don't.)
You should add a note for Latanica, you can only fight him twice per 24 hours.

Also, Jesters is a fairly bad idea until at least 90+, since it can take upwards of 10+ hits to kill even one. Plus you WILL be KS'd there at pretty much every level unless you have friends/guildmates/alts to hold a map, or you happen to find nice people that'll let you take a couple mobs. Or your server's dead and its 3AM on a school night or something. xD
(Even with the 20k range I had, Jesters was a bad place to train most of the time due to the sheer amount of people all trying to get a map.)

Otherwise, I think it's fairly solid.

EDIT: It may be a point to note that while Beginners can't actually do much at CWKPQ, they can get in and get a MoN at 90 if someone's willing to take them.
