i mean, why the hell would you be sad over something for a long time? sure, if it was 2-3 days then okay fine that's life, crud happens. but c'mon any longer than that and you need to get over it

but hey, what can a person who has a backbone know?

i wont talk about depression since i don't know much about it so ill talk about why i get sad.
mostly i get mood swings where im sad for 2-3 days then something happens and i feel better and the process repeats itself.
i get sad mostly from test results, mean teachers, mean friends, mean siblings, mean parents etc. im a sensitive person tho.
but i never get depression.

Because something in life makes you feel unhappy and helpless. Like if you lost someone you really loved and whom had made a huge impact on your life. Or you are unhappy with your physical appearance and feel that you cannot change it. Or there are some obstacle in your life that you cannot overcome. There are many things that can cause depression. Sometimes it is difficult to overcome these challenges in life to live a happy productive meaningful life without the treatment and support. We are human brings that need to feel that we belong, loved and respected.

Well no you cannot just tell someone to stop feeling certain things. Most of the time what they're feeling has NO concern with you, so just leave them alone and stop complaining about them. Stop criticizing others for how they feel, not everyone is strong-willed as you are. Stop comparing yourself to other people's experiences...

I used to dismiss depression/sadness because I thought that I was strong and that people should just get over it. But now I realise that you don't know what others are going through and just calling them a wuss without a backbone is just putting a stigma on mental illnesses. And if you're referring to sadness, then what the hell does their sadness have anything to do with you? Get over it.

being sad and being depressed are 2 different things
depression is caused by intense emotional trauma (death of relatives/friends, break up, etc.)
depression is on a whole different level then just plain sadness

You stop getting depression once you realize everything in life is pointless and you just have to live with it for no reason.

"I don't get depression"
"I'm not talking about clinical depression"
Then you're using the wrong word. -_____-
There's not really anything I can do about other than say that if someone is cutting themselves, there is obviously something mentally wrong with them and it's kinda a jerk move to just brush them aside like that.
I honestly believe that the majority of teenagers that do this and post this on the internet do it for attention, and not because of a mental disorder.

The sheer amount of people that do it are what lead me away from the belief that it is a mental disorder.

Of course, there are some that do cut themselves due to mental disorders.

It only bothers me when 14 year old girls are cutting themselves and posting pics on tumblr because "life is hard and terrible."

@saneleeboring When you grow up and something bad actually happens to you I'm sure you will be sad for more than 2-3 days.

People aren't just depressed for nothing and some people are depressed cause of hormonal dysfunction in their brains.
If your body messes up it's not like you got a choice

It's a chemical imbalance in your brain.
Depression is more than just feeling sad about something. It's a psychological disorder. It's caused by not having enough Serotonin in your brain iirc.

The same type of thing that makes us feel "good" when we do drugs is the type of thing that makes us feel like crap when we're going through depression.

It's not that people are just sad that someone in their family died and they refuse to get over it. It's that there's a chemical imbalance in their brain that's making it hard for them to get over it. Imagine you feel sad for a day. Usually in a few hours or so you'll start to feel better. With depression, they do not feel better, which is why it drags on. It has nothing to do with being tough "backboned" or anything.
that's for the guys with clinical depression or something. i can understand that because you can't control it. i was only referring to the "normal" kind of depression if you get me.

sorry if i didn't include it in my original post
My mom has had a plethora of terrible things happen to her (bullet in the head, car crashes, etc) and she has heavy depression. Thankfully she is beginning to work herself out of it.
It just has to do with your state of mind I guess. Just like pessimists and optimists; everyone thinks differently and everyone's mind works differently.
i see i see

i feel sorry for the people who can't handle it though. i hate the feeling of depression and i can't imagine feeling that for more than a week

Lol wouldn't be in a dictionary, nor would Lel.
Depression is extreme sadness by definition.
Yet, sadness isn't depression by definition.
Wut.
Yea so if a family member pass away you should just quickly get over it with no time to heal right?
2-3 days is a long time to be sad. they're gone forever unless you're a necromancer there's no use in getting sad any longer than that
