New LoL Beginner

I have finally decided to make an account for LoL but I have some questions.

What's the story and which is the best character for beginners to play?
Is there a guild or group system thing?
What are some abbreviations and game modes/types?

Also anyone want a refer for that refer-a-friend program?

Just play those freeweek champions, and see which one fits your style, it is better to play 2-3 roles pre 30, once you hit 30, there is a thing called "ranked games", which is what LoL truly all about, if you can play 2-3 roles then that will help you a lot to perform better in your games.

Easy champ I would say:

Mid : Annie, Ryze, Vladmir, Morde
ADC: Ashe, Caitlyn
Top: Garen, Darius, Wukong
Jungle : Amumu, Xin Zhao(can top too at your lvl), WW
Support: Sona, Taric

Yeah there is, just go to "join chat" and type the name of the guild or group you want to join

I wrote this a couple months ago, but it still applies.

There are 2 different modes in LoL: Dominion and Classic. You can play these games against players, CPUs, and if you want you can customize the game.
Dominion's objective is to capture turrets and hold them in order to win. It's also fast paced, unlike classic. It has 5 people on each team. You start at champion level 3. The common format is 4 people grab the top turrets (1 person captures the middle one), and 1 person captures the bottom turret.
Classic has 2 maps: Summoner's Rift, and Twisted Treeline. Classic's main objective is to destroy enemy turrets / inhibitors / nexus. Summoner's Rift has 5 people on each team, it's bigger than Twisted Treeline and has more turrets. Summoner's Rift also has a boss named Baron that you can kill for 300 gold for everyone on your team and a slight buff. You start at level 1. I reccomend you play with friends so you don't get raged at (like I did when I first started playing). Focus on last hitting enemy minions for gold and don't engage an enemy unless you either outnumber them or you're pretty sure you can 1v1 them.
Twisted Treeline has a different boss called Vilemaw and he's weaker than Baron and also grants buffs. Twisted Treeline has 3 people on each team. Twisted Tree line also has 2 altars (unlike Summoner's Rift), that give you buffs. If you capture 1 altar, you get +4 additional gold per kill. The 2nd altar grants you 10% damage, and I think something else that I forgot. Capture altars by standing over them for a certain amount of time. After capturing an altar, it's locked for 90 seconds so the enemy team can't capture it. You can't re-lock the altar until the enemy team has captured it and waited 90 seconds.
You get gold by: Waiting over time, killing minions / monsters, killing players, capturing turrets, ending other player's killstreaks, capturing altars, and by killing turrets.
Use your gold in the in-game shops that give you items. If you don't buy any items the whole game, then expect your ass to get handed to you.
When your Summoner levels you get 1 point to place into masteries (masteries are barely noticable in the game).
Every week, there is a rotation of 8 (I think?) free champions. These champions are what you'll be using until (Or after) you gather IP (From playing matches [Or purchasing Riot Points with real $ / leveling to summoner level 4 where as you get 400 Riot Points]) to buy new champions.
Champions can cost: 450 IP (260 Riot Points), 1350 IP (585 Riot Points), 3150 IP (975 Riot Points), 4800 IP (Ranges from 790-975 Riot Points), 6300 IP (975 Riot Points). They also have sales, quite often, but they only make it cheaper if you're buying with Riot Points.
Also, if you have Riot Points, you can buy champion bundles, IP / XP boosts, etc.
Matches give miniscule IP, unless you're using an IP boosts / win of the day (+150 IP for 1 match every 22 hours).
Also, 1 level grants you 1 skill point which you can spend on 1 of 4 different skills. 3 skills go up to level 5, 1 skill (refered to as "ult" ) goes up to level 3. There are 18 levels. You can place skill points into your ultimate at levels 6, 11, and 16. Every level you gain AD, armor, and magic resist.
New champions / skins are still coming out - the game hasn't died or anything.
As for the best champion in the shop, that's really up to you. There isn't any champion that really stands out.
I suggest that once you get 450 IP to buy Garen or Master Yi (unless you want to stick to rotation champions).
Current meta for classic: 1 AP caster middle, 1 bruiser top, 1 jungler, 1 support bottom, 1 ADC bot. You can't get banned for playing an ADC middle or anything, but expect to be raged / criticized.
Terms:
ADC - Attack Damage Carry, build Attack Damage, critical rate, and attack speed. My favorite season 2 build was 3 phantom dancers 2 blood thirsters and 1 Infinity edge. Phantom Dancers had a movement speed nerf and new items came out so it might not be the best, but it still works just fine for me.
Jungler: Pretty much a support that kill monsters in the jungle and gank other lanes. This is a pretty difficult role, so don't play this until you get the hang of everything.
Gank: Ambushing someone's lane. They typically give the laner the kill so that they can keep on owning their enemy.
Support: Place wards for your teammates, either have CC or heals to help your teammates sustain / secure a kill, and buy items that give off auras to other teammates.
CC: Crowd control - Stuns, Slows, Knock backs, etc.. Things that impair an enemy's ability to move or fight.
Bruiser: A tanky AD caster

My Summoner's name is QueeQuee if you can refer me.

lol.....ok I think you think LoL is like a Maplestory type game or something
I'll try to clear things up.
1)There really isn't much of a story, I don't read the lore/comics but from what I've seen there are 2 groups, Noxus (bad guys) and Demacia (good guys) and the two kingdoms fight each other. Certain characters (we call them champions) are from the different kingdoms.
2)There is something called Ranked Teams but that's only when you get to lvl 30. There is a buddy list though/friend list where you can just add people and invite them to play with you.
3) Abbreviations are ss/mia which mean missing in action from your current lane. There are things called pings and a blue ping usually means to signal everyone there/alert them. A yellow exclamation ping means to retreat. A yellow question mark ping means ss/mia pretty much. A red ping means to attack that certain area/champion. And a green ping means that the person who pinged it is on their way there. omw means on my way. That's pretty much all the abbreviations and stuff you need to know.
4) For your champion question, every person has their own comfort zone. People say Lee Sin has a high skill cap but I found him easier than most champions, so this proves it's all up to you. But if we're talking skill cap wise, I think Annie is a great low-skill cap champion who is very easy and decently strong.

You can add me if you like, PM me if you have more questions. IGN/Summoner name : ILLKEPLE

LoL is a team game ranging from 3v3, 5v5 and a capturing points and there are a variety of champions you can play. there are a group of free champions every week they are usually random but after a week or 2 when a new champion they new champion will be free to use for a week to let players use

@SarcasticMonkey: No probs. Hope you have fun, but it'll be hard for you to. League has probably the absolute worst community I've ever experienced online.
There IS a refer-a-friend program, if you so choose to do that. You can add me if you'd like. Summoner Name: JungleBooty

Anyways...
The story has already been linked.
There's no such thing as guilds because that's not really the type of game it is. It's an arena based, team-based, pvp game. There are Ranked teams though.
There's a few modes, all very simple to understand. I'll explain below!

So, there's~
Summoners Rift Normal: This mode is usually done 5v5 (A team of 5 people against another team of 5).
Twisted Treeline Normal: Which is basically a smaller map than Rift, but only allows for 3v3, and SLIGHTLY different objectives.
Dominion: A mode where you try to basically capture flags (towers) and defend them.
Proving Grounds: A map where you can do anywhere from 1-5v5, but its the smallest map available, and its pretty silly.
Customs: You decide the map, and the amount of players, and it can be used for training or simple friend matches.
Ah I see, thanks for explaining the game types

Finally- There are literally 110+ champions (characters you can play) in the game... so it's hard to recommend any one of them as a start. If you enjoy attacking- begin with Ashe. If you want to be more of a support role, play Sona or Soraka. If you want to be a mage character, you should probably try out Annie. I wouldn't recommend doing the jungle as a beginner (especially with the new changes to it). START OUT EASY. Play against bots for a few days.

Story is that the "League" is run by the Institute of War and many champions have joined it for various reasons. In the game, there are many different types of characters, called champions in game, which fall into different parts of the meta-game(the standard set-up of role sand positions in game). You have a friend list similar to maplestory and you can make games and invite your friends to join the game. There are also ranked teams in which you and your friends join together to make a team and play 5v5 or 3v3 in order to get ranked, which is your position in the game based on how good you are. Abbreviations
APC-Ability power carry
adc-Attack damage carry
mia-missing in action
ARAM-all random all mid
gank-attack a lane from the jungle or another lane
In the current meta game, there is a champion that goes into the "top" lane who is generally a tank who is able to take alot of damage. A jungle is a person who kills creeps and monsters in the jungle instead of in the lanes and does not directly face off against another champion. The jungler helps other lanes by helping your allies in the lane to kill the opponent. In the middle lane there is an AD assassian, a champion who dives and kills the other carries, or an ap carry, champions who use magic to deal damage. In the bottom lane there is an ad carry that is ranged and relies on auto attacks to do damage and a support that can prevent the ADC from dying or help the ADC get kills
