I always went for fire types because I find them awesome, so Charmander, Cyndaquill and Torchic. I really liked Chicorita though.
Idk about others since I quit after 3rd gen.

Gen 1: Charmander (because he's so fire)
Gen 2: Totodile (who doesn't want an awesome crocodile on their team?)
Gen 3:Torchic (my first pokemon, and great versatility)
Gen 4: Chimchar (awesome monkey fighter)
Gen 5: Oshawott (his last evolution is awesome)
Gen 6: Froakie (because Water-Dark type is OP)

My favorite overall though...That's tough between Bulbasaur and Cyndaquil. Guess I'd say Bulbasaur because Venusaur can mega evolve, but once Gen 2 gets their mega evolutions I might have to re-evaluate

Meganium really is the best wall, it can be either physically defensive or specially defensive, can set up screens, can stall out whole teams and be the biggest PoS in its tier.

I always grab the fire types bc I like it fierce and hot.

Chikorita was what made me play/buy pokemon silver on release.

I always pick the grass starters <3
