...fusion anvil a DS "Force Shield of Extremes" to a regular equipment classed "shield"? I know that the DS shield isn't classed as a "shield" but I was hoping there would be a chance since it has the word "shield" in it.

No, Hayato's Kodachi is a secondary weapon, and it isn't classed as a shield.
Plus, it has no appearance, you don't see it on the character.

It apparently can be done with DS and Mihille's. I've seen a pally with mihile's light shield
