How dead is maple story these days? I was away for a long time
also is it worth making a shadower if i have like 1b or is that way too little>?

1 billion is easily enough. A full root abyss set and a weapon is less than 100mil, and with Reward Points and Spell traces; they can all be scrolled perfectly without spending any mesos.
I don't know about other servers, but Windia is definitely alive and kicking. It's still hard to find a really good FM spot, I have to search for a while to find a free channel to grind, and the main PQs still have groups running throughout the day.

if you're looking for fun, dont play maplestory
Fringe worlds - quite dead.
Main worlds - very much alive.
Go to Scania, Bera, or Windia if you want a decently social experience.

If you want a class that is good with low funds then BW or NW is your best bet. Thief gear is expensive, but with the recent price drops, 1bil should be able to get you a full set of cRA for a NW, and his bossing is absolutely amazing. Of course he isn't perfect, he's basically easy mode NL so you'd have to live with playing Maple on easy mode
